Gary Farr and the T.Bones - Dem Bones
Gary Farr formed The T-Bones in Worthing, Sussex, in 1963. He was the son of boxer Tommy Farr and his brother Ricky went on to promote the Isle Of Wight festivals in the late sixties. The band were a raw R&B outfit who were very popular in the clubs and made an appearance on 'Ready Steady Go'.
After disbanding The T-Bones in 1967 Gary recorded a couple of discs for the Marmalade label (the first with Kevin Westlake) and then headed for the States, where he recorded the Strange Fruit album, which is quite rare. Richard Thompson played lead guitar on this one and again Mighty Baby provided the backing. It was also produced by Fritz Fryer - fomer member of The Four Pennies. John Reed tells me that Gary Farr's 1973 US-only album for Atco is surprisingly good, if typical of the US singer/songwriter period. Farr had a great voice.

Ofra Haza - Earth
Ofra Haza (November 19, 1957 – February 23, 2000) was a popular Israeli singer, actress and international recording artist.
Of Yemenite Jewish ancestry, Haza was born the youngest of nine children in the poor Tel Aviv neighborhood of Hatikvah. She became an instant local, then national, success story, the subject of great pride for many Israelis of Yemenite origin.
Her voice has been described as mezzo-soprano, of near-flawless tonal quality, capable of lending itself to a variety of musical styles with apparent ease.
Inspired by a love of her Yemenite-Jewish culture, the appeal of her musical art quickly spread to a wider Middle Eastern audience, somehow bridging the divide between Israel and the Arab countries. As her career progressed, the multi-lingual Haza was able to switch between traditional and more commercial singing styles without jeopardising her credibility. The music, too, fused elements of Eastern and Western instrumentation, orchestration and dance-beat.

Maurice El Medioni - Cafe Oran
Maurice El Médioni grew up in Algeria, in the Mediterranean port of Oran where he lived with his family in the Jewish quarters in the 1930s. Médioni´s life took a drastic turn when his brother purchased an old piano at the flea market and brought it home. Within days, Maurice, nine years old, taught himself, without the guidance of a teacher, to play popular French songs he had heard on the radio.
As the influences in his life changed so did his musical style. When Algeria was liberated from the Nazi-controlled Vichy government in 1942, Maurice was playing the piano for the American troops at the US Forces Red Cross Bar in Oran. With Maurice´s permission, the soldiers used his piano to play the popular jazz and boogie-woogie numbers. By observing the dancing fingers of the soldiers he quickly learned to play these musical styles and incorporated them into his unique style. To meet the requests of the soldiers, he picked up boogie-woogie and Latino numbers. Later, befriending three Rai singers from Algeria, he was brought into the Andalous music culture, where he introduced the piano into the Rai music. Maurice gained popularity in his area and soon became the respected pianist for “l´Opéra” in Oran, joining talented musicians from many different parts of North Africa as well as other Jewish artists like Lillie Boniche and Lili Labassi.
Medioni's talent is still awe-inspiring. Equally impressive is how his ambiguously Arabic/Jewish music somehow makes the chasm between these two people seem rather small.
