Robert Wyatt & Friends - Theatre Royal Drury Lane 1974 -09-08
In 1974, not long after an accident that left him partially paralyzed, former Soft Machine vocalist/drummer Robert Wyatt arranged for a concert to be recorded and broadcast on the BBC. For the realization of this event, he assembled a conclave of progressive-rock heavyweights guaranteed to stiffen the nipples of the most jaded aficionados, particularly those fans of the Canterbury scene. Hugh Hopper, formerly of Soft Machine, played bass. Fred Frith and Mike Oldfield (yes, THAT one) played guitar. Laurie Allan and Pink Floyd's Nick Mason handled drums jointly. Also featured were session stalwart Gary Windo and keyboardist Dave Stewart (of Hatfield & the North, not Eurythmics).
Much of the material is taken from Wyatt's brilliant Rock Bottom album. Neil Diamond's I'm a Believer closes the set as the band works it for all it's worth. Although none of these versions would be considered definitive, this dream band plays the shit out of the material and sound as if they are having the time of their lives. Wyatt himself is in great voice and sounds particularly playful at times.
Robert Wyatt & Friends - Theatre Royal Drury Lane 1974-09-08
01 - Introduction by John Peel

Aster Aweke - Sugar
Sometimes referred to as “Ethiopia’s Aretha Franklin”, Aster Aweke is an Ethiopian singer who lives in the United States.
Aweke was born in 1961 in Gondar, Ethiopia and was raised in the capital city of Addis Ababa. Her father was a senior civil servant in the Imperial government. By the age of 13 she was determined to become a musician, and started her career at Hager Fikir Theatre in Addis Ababa. By her late teens, she was singing in Addis Ababa clubs and hotels with such bands as the Continental Band, Hotel D'Afrique Band, Shebele Band, and the Ibex Band before they became the internationally known Roha Band. Aweke's distinct style has been influenced by other Ethiopian singers such as Bizunesh Bekele. Launching a solo career, she was encouraged by musical entrepreneur Ali Tango, who financed and released five cassettes and two singles of her music. By 1981, she had become disillusioned by Ethiopia's oppressive political climate following the death of iconic leader Haile Selassie and relocated to the United States. She is a voice for her people and perhaps the most famous female singer in Ethiopia.

Putumayo Presents - Americana
The Putumayo label normally specialises in championing hitherto unsung musical styles from the far flung corners of the globe, collecting them and presenting them in lush, skillfully annotated packages. This chapter is a change of tack in that it tackles a well-recognised genre but focuses on the rootsiest, home-spun tales instead of the high-gloss mainstream country that dominates the US charts (even a track by Norah Jones, performing under a pseudonym, is actually pretty great).
So many of the songs on this concise, 12-track collection sound like they may have been composed on a ratty acoustic guitar on the porch of a shack. But romantic notions aside, this is a stellar collection of those just above the radar artists and while it is inevitable that some clichés of the genre pervade, it is an ilustration of the variety of tones that can be found in the rural music of America.

Psychedelic Phinland: Finnish Hippie & Underground Music 1967 - 1974
There's 29 tracks from almost as many artists, a fantastic trip into the early daze of the Finnish freak-scene. Psychedelic Phinland is just as political, and parodic, and perverse as it is potheaded. There's plenty of Flower Power pop and/or fuzzed-out blues rock, but you'll also find jazz-damaged prog and mystic folk, revolutionary theatre and electronic insanity.

Marcel Khalife - Summer Nights Dream
This is not my usual acid-psych post, rather consider it a second attempt to make you discover lebanese music after Nawal El Zoughbi."Summer Night's Dream" is Lebanese composer Marcel Khalife's balletic take on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," an exotic fantasia scored mostly for flutes, strings and world beasts. It blends Arabic folk themes with classical Western structure and orchestral richness, creating a whole that is as interesting as its culturally diverse parts.
One thing is certain: You need not be Arabic to succumb to Khalife's melodic flair. For all their differing moods and textures, their enchantment as well their drama, his compositions and orchestrations almost invariably cast a lyrical spell, the flutes and violins often soaring over ever-shifting polyrhythms. Sometimes the music abruptly shifts cultural perspectives, as when accordionist Antoine Deib evokes, intentionally or not, memories of the late bandoneon master Astor Piazzola on "Tango for My Lover's Eyes." There are also darting string solos and neatly woven ensemble passages that are not all that far removed front either jazz or bluegrass.
