Cluster - Sowiesoso
After a scission of the avant-garde (Berlin) group « KLUSTER » due to the departure of Conrad Schnitzler, the two musicians Dieter Moebius and Hans Joachim Roedelius go to work in duet as « CLUSTER ». The band’s first years were clearly orientated to Krautrock and to experimental electronic music. Consequently, the production of the band started with massive, radical improvisations, constructed around electric organ works, electronic collages, guitar sound manipulations, feed back… The result is rather similar to KLUSTER’s underground, conceptual music, very chaotic with lot of distortion and reverb. With its repetitive, hypnotic guitar patterns and embryonic electronic collages, the second album “II” can be seen as a classic in 70’s German electronic underground. This high quality experimental electronic music will progressively lead the band to something far from the kraut rock scene and extreme music.
Since 1974, CLUSTER has recorded many albums of ambitious, pre-ambient electronic music with gorgeous synth arrangements, a groovy tone and a constant sense of melody. “Zuckerzeit”, “Sowiesoso” and “Grosses Wasser” are the most representative progressive albums of the band’s career.

Irmin Schmidt : When we started we didn't start as a rock group. That happened to us. When I founded the group I was a classical composer and conductor and pianist making piano recitals, playing a lot of contemporary music but also Brahms, Chopin and Beethoven and everything. And when we got together I wanted to do something in which all contemporary music becomes one thing.
Contemporary music in Europe especially, the new music was classical music was Boulez, Stockhausen and all that. I studied all that, I studied Stockhausen but nobody talked about rock music like Sly Stone, James Brown or the Velvet Underground as being contemporary music.
Then there was jazz and all these elements were our contemporary music, it was new. It was, in a way, much newer than the new classical music which claimed to be 'the new music'.
But I thought the real, new thing in the 20th Century, which had no European tradition like contemporary music coming from Wagner, Mahler or whatever, was jazz and rock. That was something that came out of a totally new feeling and I wanted to combine them all and, well, I did.
Jaki was a jazz drummer, Mickey was a beat guitarist and Holger had also played jazz and studied classical music and I was a highly, professionally trained conductor and composer who had no idea how to play jazz, well I had an idea but I was much more classical. But I wanted to bring these elements all together and out came Can that made avant garde, progressive rock.

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Anthology
Strawberry Alarm Clock was a one-hit wonder psychedelic rock band from Los Angeles, known for their 1967 hit "Incense and Peppermints".
On their first and most famous single, "Incense and Peppermints", lead vocals were sung by Greg Munford, a 16-year-old friend of the band. The song reached #1 on the Billboard pop singles chart in late 1967. After that success the band added George Bunnell (bass and rhythm guitar) before making their first LP in 1967, also titled Incense and Peppermints. Bunnell would also become their main songwriter. Some early Strawberry Alarm Clock songs were penned by George Bunnell and Steve Bartek (who would much later join Oingo Boingo). Bartek played flute on the debut album, but could not join the band because of school.
The Strawberry Alarm Clock made two notable appearances in films, first in the 1968 Jack Nicholson movie Psych-Out, where they played several songs, including "Incense and Peppermints", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", and "The Pretty Song From Psych-Out", and then in the 1970 Russ Meyer camp classic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

Brian Eno - The Pearl (with Harold Budd & Daniel Lanois)
The Pearl, released in 1984, is a set of tranquil piano tone poems. The music is simple modal music in an ambient style. What makes it so captivating is the way Eno creates evocative spaces for Budd to play within. This has the effect of making the spaces between notes as important as the notes themselves.
Budd is sensitive to this play between the notes and silence, and tailors his music to allow the notes to drift towards silence. Think of Satie played underwater, and you have an approximation of the effect of these pieces.
There are 11 pieces on the CD, each intriguingly titled; “Late October”, “A stream with bright fish”, or “An echo of night”, for example. The CD artwork captures the idea of the pieces perfectly, too. Irregular patches of glistening iridescent water shine against dark pebbles, almost drawing your eye away from a perfect pearl.
This music is understated, but masterful. It may lure you or lull you, but either way, it is irresistible.

Gram Parsons - GP/Grievous Angel
In the pursuit of what he labeled "Cosmic American Music," Gram Parsons--with the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and as a solo artist--helped invent country-rock, forever changing the relationship between the two genres. GP, released in 1973, and GRIEVOUS ANGEL, released posthumously in 1974, are the only two studio albums on which Parsons served as the lone bandleader. With the help of Elvis Presley's backing band and a then unknown singer named Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals, Parsons wrapped up bluegrass, honky tonk, traditional country, R&B, and rock & roll in one delicious package.
Compiled here on one CD, both GP and GRIEVOUS ANGEL are packed with country-rock classics like the character sketch ballad "She," the boot-tapping "That's All It Took," and the irresistibly rocking "Big Mouth Blues," while "Return of the Grievous Angel" is an all-time Parsons gem and one of his most beautiful duets with Harris. The albums flow together perfectly, with the strength of the songwriting and musicianship guaranteeing no missteps along the way (even the covers of "Love Hurts" and a rave-up version of the Louvin Brothers' "Cash on the Barrellhead" sparkle). In addition to its status as one of the quintessential, defining documents of country-rock, GP/GRIEVOUS ANGEL is still a beautiful, satisfying listen decades after its release.

The Byrds - Sweetheart of the Rodeo: Legacy Edition
In the same year that Bob Dylan stepped back from his electric pilgrimages by releasing an album of roots-oriented morality tales, the Byrds took a symbolic flight to Nashville. Gone was Roger McGuinn's singular 12-string guitar sound and the acid rock that had had an effect on everyone from the Monkees to the Velvet Underground. McGuinn now played banjo, and bassist Chris Hillman doubled on the mandolin, both seemingly reconsidering their musical approaches. And while Dylan remained the songwriter of choice, his tunes now sat alongside a rearranged hymn ("I Am a Pilgrim"), a bluegrass version of a famous outlaw tale (Woody Guthrie's "Pretty Boy Floyd"), and a cover of the Louvin Brothers ("The Christian Life"). This was a musical turn, turn, turn, indeed.
The obvious catalyst for all this reconstruction was the arrival of young Gram Parsons, and SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO played as if it was his coming-out party. He introduced Hillman and McGuinn to a musical world that seemed totally foreign to these predecessors of the Summer of Love, but one which lay a scanthundred miles outside their L.A. windows, in Bakersfield. Parsons' most important act was to help shape the overall sound of the album, but he contributed two original songs as well--"One Hundred Years From Now" and "Hickory Wind", a signature composition he'd record again. SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO caused an entire musical community to reconsider the musicaltraditions of America.

International Submarine Band - Safe at Home
Just before Gram Parsons cut a wide swath through American music with Sweetheart Of The Rodeo-era Byrds and the Flying Burrito Bros., he forged a new musical genre with the seminal 1967 country-rock sides he cut with his legendary International Submarine Band. It's a young, confident Gram Parsons here, showing the world he's ready for business and firing the first volley in an amazing -- if too brief -- career that would soon stand the rock 'n' roll world on its ear.

Epitaph for a Legend - International Artists Story
Epitaph for a Legend is the story of the International Artist(s) (IA) label, which operated out of Austin from 1965 to 1970. The label was run by Lelan Rogers, brother of country music star Kenny Rogers (everyone considered him the coward of the county). IA developed a mystique in the 1960s as it was the label of the 13th Floor Elevators, but a number of other artists were on IA, including Red Krayola (known on early recordings as Red Crayola) and Lightnin' Hopkins. Epitaph for a Legend is a frustrating compilation because the story of the label is as interesting as the music it released, but little of that story is told on this compilation. Everything about this compilation is raw, from the sound quality of the recordings to the stark black-and-white graphics to the interview with Lelan Rogers printed (in maddeningly small type on the booklet—would it have cost that much extra to have used a larger font and another sheet of paper?). The interview ends because, as the liner notes explain, the tape ended. The interviewer gives no information about Lelan Rogers except to waste several lines describing his office in Century City at the time of the interview (but I have no idea when interview took place because, of course, that information is nowhere to be found. Some time in the 1980s perhaps?) From the content of the interview, readers will be able to figure out that Rogers ran the label but had a tenuous relationship with the rock acts on the label because of his age (he was around 40 when the 13th Floor Elevators were recording for IA) and because he was more "establishment" than the musicians on the label. Still, under his leadership the label released some significant music and he is justified in claiming that the San Francisco sound first emerged in Texas with the Elevators.

Harmonia & Brian Eno - Tracks & Traces / Harmonia 76
Before starting a fruitful career in solo, Michael Rother integrated Cluster’s side project called Harmonia. Initially formed by Hans Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius, the band had the intention to go further in ambient music approach. Rejecting a great part of the experimental side of Cluster’s music (I & II), they recorded "Musik von" in 1974. Michael Rother who produced the same year Cluster’s Zukerzeit, collaborated in Harmonia for guitars, ambient synth parts. With rather discreet appearances of the band on stage, the promotion of "Musik von" failed to attract the attention of the public. Musically the compositions stay obscure, consisting of complex, “avant-garde” pieces made for electronic gadgets, organs, including drum machines, repetitive pulses. The atmosphere is "abstract", sometimes "cosmic" but still melodic. In 1975, the trio recorded its seminal "Deluxe" with the participation of Mani Neumeier (Guru Guru) on drums. The album was produced by Michael Rother himself. With new, various compositional ideas, inventive synthesized sounds and Rother’s guitar signature, this album is more relaxed, light than the previous one. Historically it remains a pre-ambient electronic standard. Brian Eno who is fascinated by the music of Harmonia joined the musicians on stage during a concert at the Fabrik Club in Hamburg.
He finally collaborated with the band in 1976 for their last album "Harmonia 76- Tracks & traces". The music is clearly into ambient, "aquatic", dreamy atmospheres with floating synth effects, repetitive guitar lines. ENO wrote the lyrics and provided some synth parts. After Harmonia’s dissolution, Brian Eno will work with Roedelius & Moebius for several personal albums.

Mano Negra - Amerika Perdida [Live]
Mano Negra was a French band fronted by Manu Chao. The band was founded in 1987 by Manu, his brother Antoine, and his cousin Santiago Casariego. It split around 1995, but many members had already left by 1992.
Mano Negra mixed a number of styles: Punk rock (influenced by The Clash), Reggae, Ska and Latin music (with a brass section). The band, which is still revered on three continents, had been among the pioneers of world music fusion and are a direct influence to countless bands in Europe and South America.
La Mano Negra ("The Black Hand") was an alleged anarchist organization in Spain. The Spanish police accused most of the Spanish anarchists of being part of the organization.
It is also a common expression in Spanish to say "Aquí hubo mano negra" ("There was a black hand here") to say that something has been made illegally or lacking moral values.
