The Sonics - Psycho-Sonic

The Sonics from Tacoma, Washington were formed in 1963 in the wake of the early 60s success of local favorites the Kingsmen and the Wailers (whose Etiquette label they recorded for).
The Sonics combined the classic Northwest-area teen-band raunch with early English band grit (particularly influenced by the Kinks), relentless rhythmic drive, and unabashed '50s-style blues shouting for a combination that still makes their brand of rock and roll perhaps the raunchiest ever captured on wax.
The Sonics started out playing at St Mary's Parish Hall, then Tacoma's Red Carpet teen dance club, Olympia's Skateland, Evergreen Ballroom, Pearl's and the Spanish Castle Ballroom. It was the Wailers bassist, Buck Ormsby that discovered the band as he was out talent scouting for their label, Etiquette Records.
Unlike what was customary in those days the Sonics used to play as loud as possible. One of the semi-legendary stories going around about their recording sessions tells that the Sonics were only satisfied about the studio sound when all VU-meters were continuously in the red, thus driving the technicians to despair.
Their first album was a masterpiece: rough, aggressive, distorted with sweaty and frantic rock and roll. The songs "(She's a) Witch", "Psycho" and "Strychnine" written by Gerry Roslie were outstanding. For those who are not familiar with the Sonics, the first lines of “Strychnine” give a nice impression of their world: “some people like water / some people like wine / but I like the taste ... / ... of straight Strychnine”

Clannad - Themes

Clannad are Máire Ní Bhraonáin (Moya Brennan), Ciarán Brennan, Pól Brennan, Noel Duggan and Pádraig Duggan.
Clannad first made their mark in the folk and traditional scene in the 1970s in Ireland and Europe, they subsequently went on to bridge the gap between traditional celtic music and pop music in the '80s and '90s with albums such as Macalla and Anam. Lead singer Moya Brennan and her sister Enya have also enjoyed huge success as solo artists.
They are also regarded as the band who, for the first time, put Irish traditional music and the Irish language on the world stage and paved the way for many other Irish artists.
After ten years disbanded, the five original members of Clannad reunited onstage at the Celtic Connections Festival in February 2007 in Glasgow. They expressed their wishes to release a new studio album, but no official announcements have been made as of yet.

Psych-Out - Original Soundtrack

This is probably the strangest movie Jack Nicholson or any of these somewhat famous actors have been in. This film is a take on the late 60's scene with odd characters and strange situations pieced together somewhat incoherently. Its message is against drugs but not in a way that overly screams it as Dick Clark said. Honestly, drugs might help you better understand it in the end. The cinematography is done quite well for this flick with several different artsy shots and sequences. The soundtrack is pretty solid if you enjoy psychedelic and garage music from the 60's with songs by The Seeds and The Strawberry Alarm Clock. There are also songs by presumably studio groups such as The Storybook and The Boenzee Cryque that appear to be used for the Mumblin' Jim songs. - Nick Carroll (Badmovies.org)

Psych-Out - Original Soundtrack (Sidewalk T-5913) 1967
1. The Pretty Song from Psych-out The Storybook
2. Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow The Strawberry Alarm Clock
3. Two Fingers Pointing on You The Seeds

6. Psych-out Sanctorium The Storybook
7. Beads of Innocence The Storybook

Peculiar Hole In The Sky - Pop-Psych From Down Under

60s Australian psychadelic pop compilation.
Most of the tracks here are from singles that made the charts in Australia. That doesn't mean they're slick. They had very few resources to record and get their music out. This made them take an independent DIY approach. The way they filtered the pop music they heard from the northern hemisphere makes their sound authentic. Many of these bands didn't get to release proper albums.

Johnny Cash - The Gospel Collection

When Cash first went to Sun Records' Sam Phillips in 1954, he presented himself as a gospel singer, only to be turned away when Phillips told him gospel didn't sell. He came back and tried again, as a country singer, and landed his first recording contract. He cut at least two gospel songs at Sun : "I Was There When It Happened" and "Belshazzar" (a Cash composition). He ultimately left Sun for Columbia in 1958 when Phillips refused his request to cut a gospel album.
A main influence in his life was his mother Carrie, who was a devout fundamentalist and took young J.R. (as his parents named him - initials only) to her Pentecostal church and sang gospel songs to him at home.
With later success in Nashville and the accompanying treadmill of non-stop touring, Cash turned to the truckers' friend: speed. He was arrested in El Paso, Texas, in 1965 for trying to smuggle in hundreds of amphetamine pills and tranquilizers from Mexico.
His first wife, Vivian, divorced him, and he moved into a Nashville apartment with Waylon Jennings during their "lost year" when they hid their pill stashes from each other. June Carter began trying to point him toward redemption.
The following year, he and June won a Grammy for their duet of "Jackson." Not long thereafter, as he recalled in his autobiography, he was a "walking vision of death." Totally strung out and depressed by speed, Cash crawled into remote Nickajack Cave near Chattanooga, Tenn., a cave that was the site of a Native American slaughter and was also a Confederate soldiers' hideout during the battle of Lookout Mountain. Cash, high on speed, crawled deep into the cave to die. Eventually, he had a revelation from God and slowly crawled back out, finding June and his mother at the cave entrance, as he wrote in his autobiography.
