Vashti Bunyan - Just Another Diamond Day
Just Another Diamond Day is the debut album by United Kingdom singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan.
In the mid to late 1960s, Bunyan was under contract to Andrew Oldham, which saw her release two singles. However, Bunyan found the experience frustrating, and decided to head for the Scottish islands in search of an artistic commune supposedly established by Donovan. She travelled around the countryside with her partner Robert, in a horse-drawn wagon. It was during these travels that she wrote the songs which would later appear on Just Another Diamond Day.
Bunyan returned to London where she was urged by producer Joe Boyd to record her songs while they were still fresh. The recording session took place throughout December 1969 at Sound Techniques in London. Song arrangements were performed by Robert Kirby, who also worked with Nick Drake. Members of Fairport Convention and Incredible String Band contributed to some tracks. The album was initially released in 1970 but was a commercial failure and Bunyan retired from music for many years.
Just Another Diamond Day was re-released by Spinney Records in 2000, its success prompting Bunyan to return to music and eventually record the much delayed follow-up Lookaftering, released in 2005.

Renaissance - BBC Sessions
There were two groups under the banner of RENAISSANCE. The first group included Keith and Jane RELF (vocals) and came from the YARDBIRDS ashes. The second and better known incarnation produced some of the best music that I have ever heard. Annie HASLAM's five octave range fit perfectly with the classical/orchestral rock (lot of piano playing & full symphony orchestra backup) created by the other members. The soprano voice of Annie and the piano virtuosity of John TOUT allied to the beauty and refreshing melodies, the refinement of the arrangements gave their music its magnificent splendour. This album is a 1999 collection handpicked by vocalist Annie Haslam. Features excellent quality live recordings that the band did for BBC radio between 1975-1978.

Maddy Prior & Rick Kemp - Happy Families
Rick Kemp is an English bass player, songwriter, vocalist and record producer, best known for his work with the pioneering folk-rock band, Steeleye Span. In 1971, Kemp played with King Crimson, shortly before the band recorded their album, Islands. However, he turned down the opportunity to join them on a full-time basis, and reportedly departed the band after just two weeks.
Kemp has played bass on a number of Maddy Prior recordings, and was a member the Maddy Prior Band in the 1980s. The 1990 album Happy Families was officially credited to 'Maddy Prior and Rick Kemp'.

Rainy Daze - That Acapulco Gold
A great pop-punk-psychedelic outfit from Denver, Colorado. Only the first 45 appears on their album which is recommended. They first formed in 1965 when they specialised in playing beat and R&B and they were a regular attraction at local frat parties. Almost unbelievably they were unearthed by Phil Spector who signed them to a management contract and a giant publicity campaign was planned but never really materialised.
For an album that was basically an afterthought, this is a good, if disjointed, effort. UNI Records picked up the group's first single, the vaudevillian "That Acupulco Gold", written by group member Tim Gilbert and his songwriting partner John Carter, for national distribution, and quickly assembled an LP by the same name. The single reached #70 before radio programmers figured out the drug reference, and the album became UNI's second LP release.
The album is too disparate to be called a classic, but its mix of 60's punk ("Absurd Bird", "Weatherman", "Discount City"), pop ("For What It's Worth"), soul (a three song medley, and a gently psychedelicized version of "Baby I Need Your Lovin'"), and psych ("In My Mind Lives A Forest", and the orient-tinged "Snow and Ice and Burning Sand") almost guarantees that the listener will find something worthwhile.

Gila - Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee
This Gila concept album is dedicated to the Indian American’s extermination. Strongly Popol Vuh influenced thanks to Florian Fricke’s presence (playing mellotron and grand piano). Conny Veit plays guitar, flute, vibraphone and moog while Sabine Merbach is on vocals.
It’s not space rock here, but rather psyche folk. The first piece (“this morning”) is beautiful, ethereal but dynamic and positive, with beautiful spiritual lyrics, related to man’s harmony with nature. The second one, (“In a sacred manner”) is in the same vein, with lyrics still related to spiritual life (“In a sacred manner I live, to the heavens i gaze”). These two pieces features excellent guitar, nice breaks with aerial vibraphone flights and glittering cymbals. The album also features world/tribal influences and vocals, like in the dark and intriguing “Little smoke”.

Velvet Underground - Live at Max's Kansas City (Deluxe Edition)
JUNE 24 - AUG. 28, 1970: THE VELVETS PLAY MAX'S.
The Velvet Underground were the first live band to play Max's Kansas City. They performed at Max's to promote the LOADED album. BRIGID BERLIN (POLK) recorded the last night on her Sony TC120 cassette recorder and the recording was later released by Atlantic as Live at Max's Kansas City.
Doug Yule's brother, Billy, replaced Maureen Tucker during the Max's performances as she was pregnant. Billy was paid about $25.00 per week - a $60.00 fee for all performances plus daily round trip fare to/from Long Island plus food.
After the last performance, Lou Reed left the band and moved back into his parents' home at 35 Oakfield Avenue, working for his father as a typist, earning $40 a week.
Danny Fields: "I was responsible for Live at Max's. That very week they broke up, we realized Brigid had the last recorded performance of The Velvet Underground because it was clear that Lou wasn't coming back. I persuaded Brigid that we take the cassette to Atlantic since they still sort of had them on the label... and this would be their second record and a cheap way for Atlantic to fulfil its contractual obligations. And they could buy this master and all rights to it for I think $10,000. I split it with her and then she started to be mad at me because she thought she had given me too big a cut." Occasionally Lou would venture into New York and visit the Factory.
Glenn O'Brien: "I met Lou at the Factory and he was really pathetic. I don't know what he was on, but he was really out of it. He was my hero, but it was like his life was over."
