The Koala - The Koala
In a weird marketing gimmick, these guys were given an Australian name and pretended to be Aussie immigrants. It didn’t work, as the album bombed and now takes its place among those very rare Capitol albums we all drool over. A few songs here have some really out of control fuzz guitar, and the vocalist is strident in a Fred Cole kind of way. For the good songs, it’s as exciting as hell and it’s not surprising that this is a highly-sought-after album.

James Brown - Live at the Apollo 2 [Deluxe Edition]
James Brown's LIVE AT THE APOLLO VOLUME 2 was not recorded during the same 1963 dates as the legendary original, but five years later, during another stand at the Harlem theatre. This set is every bit the equal of its better-known predecessor, and was recorded at a key point in Brown's career. The year 1968, of course, was a tumultuous one both politically and socially, and although it wasn't until later in the yearthat Brown first recorded the epochal "Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)", he and his band were already clearly incorporating both the black-is-beautiful ethos and, on the epic 20-minute version of "It's A Man's Man's Man's World", theincreasingly loose, funky sound of younger bands like Sly and the Family Stone.
The two-disc Deluxe Edition recreates an entire evening's performance, including a solo turn by Brown's veteran warm-up act, Bobby Byrd (doing Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music"), and an intermission version of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" by Brown's band. This is among the most essential live James Brown documents.

James Brown - Live at the Apollo [Deluxe Edition]
Live At The Apollo was a 1963 album by James Brown and originally issued on King Records.[1] King Records originally demurred to issue the disc, finally doing so under duress from Brown and his manager Bud Hobgood. It was disagreements such as this that moved Brown, the following year, to begin recording (in violation of his contract with King) for the Smash record label.
The record itself was an amazingly rapid seller in both inner-city and college markets. R&B disc jockeys often would play side 1 in its entirety, pausing (usually to insert commercials) only to return to play side 2 in full, as well. The side break occurred in the middle of the extended track "Lost Someone." Many record stores, especially in the southeast U. S., found themselves practically unable to keep up with the demand for the product, eventually ordering several cases at a time.
In 2003, the album was ranked number 24 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Chris Bell - I Am The Cosmos
Chris Bell (1951–1978) was a singer, songwriter, and guitarist born in Memphis, Tennessee. Along with Alex Chilton, he led the power pop band Big Star, which recorded albums during the early 1970s. Chris Bell left the group after their first album, #1 Record, but contributed some music and lyrics to their second LP, 1974's Radio City. He recorded as a solo artist for the remainder of the 1970s; two of these influential solo recordings, "I am the Cosmos" and "You and Your Sister," were released on a 1978 single on Car Records. These two songs became popular among collectors of Big Star-related items, and they were later covered on the 1991 Blood album by This Mortal Coil.
Chilton was asked by Bell to join several months after the group had started performing. Eventually the group, during a period of recording demos and tracks for their first album, settled on naming the group "Big Star." The lineup for Big Star's first album was composed of Bell (guitars/vocals), Chilton (guitars, vocals), Hummel (bass, vocals), and Stephens (drums, vocals). Bell and Chilton wrote most of the group's songs, with occasional writing contributions from Hummel and Stephens. Bell was even more influenced by the music of the British Invasion than Chilton, whose subsequent career has seen him turn toward soul music, country, punk rock (producing The Cramps), R&B, and European pop. Bell steadfastly retained his Beatles-oriented pop influences throughout his career.
Along with Ardent Studios founder John Fry and engineer Terry Manning, Bell is credited with much of the mixing and engineering work done on the first Big Star album, #1 Record. After this album failed to find commercial success (due to confusion by its soul-oriented distributor Stax in marketing the album), Bell left the band in 1972 and began a struggle with intense depression that gripped him off and on for the rest of his life, stemming partly from his homosexuality and dependence on heroin; both of which he tried to deal with through his strong belief in Christianity.

Buster Poindexter - Buster Poindexter
Best known for his tenure fronting the hugely influential New York Dolls, David Johansen was a true chameleon; throughout the course of a career which saw him transform from a lipstick-smeared proto-punk hero into an urbane blue-eyed soul man and finally into a tuxedo-clad lounge lizard.
At the end of 1984 he resurfaced in the pompadoured guise of Buster Poindexter, a supposed ethnomusicologist armed with an expansive knowledge of R&B chestnuts. After debuting the Buster character at a series of mid-'80s downtown New York loft gigs with the Uptown Horns, Johansen continued honing the identity in the piano bars of Manhattan, establishing a lounge swinger persona which predated the lounge-kitsch revival of the mid-'90s by a decade.
As Poindexter's popularity grew, he began fronting a large band dubbed the Banshees in Blue and building a devoted following on the New York club circuit. In 1987, he issued an LP, Buster Poindexter, which featured the party classic "Hot Hot Hot," an effervescent cover of an obscure 1984 soca hit.

Muddy Mississippi Waters - Live
Born McKinley Morganfield (Rolling Fork, Mississippi), the most influential Chicago bluesman modernized the Mississippi Delta blues by adding an electric guitar, developing the now-ubiquitous ensemble-driven Chicago style, revolutionizing the music's sound. The son of a sharecropper, Waters played harmonica and sang at family gatherings, finally taking up the guitar as a teenager (folklorists Alan Lomax and John Work made field recordings of him during the early '40s while Waters was working on a southern plantation). Moved to Chicago during the '40s to find a better life (and to become a professional musician). There, he met Big Bill Broonzy and Sunnyland Slim, and begin recording what is almost a canon of modern blues: "Rollin' Stone," "I Can't Be Satisfied," "I Feel Like Going Home," "Got My Mojo Working," "Mannish Boy," and "Hoochie Coochie Man."
Musicians from Chuck Berry to Mick Jagger (whose band was named after a Water's record) were influenced by Waters, and large number of blues musicians -- many famous in their own right -- paid their dues in Waters' band: Little Walter, Big Walter Horton, Jimmy Rogers, James Cotton, Junior Wells, and A.C. Reed are among them. Heck, Led Zepplin's biggest hit ("Whole Lotta Love" is a reworking of a Willie Dixon-written Muddy Waters song.

Mushroom - Early One Morning
Formed in Dublin in the early 70’s, MUSHROOM were one of Ireland's leading pop bands from ‘70 to ‘74. In fact, they had a huge hit with their first single "Devil Among the Tailors" from their LP "Early one morning" which reached no. 2 in the Irish top 20 charts in 1973, selling over a 100,000 LP’s and singles; another song, “Kings and Queens”, reached number 13 the following year. They band comprised five musicians among whom were violinist Pat Collins and guitarist Aengus McNally, son of actor Ray McNally; the other three contributed to the band’s acid folk sound with organ, moog, harpsichord, bass, drums, tin whistles, chimes, bodhran and vocals. As far as comparisons go, HORSLIPS comes immediately to mind.Their album features traditional Celtic folk-flavoured melodies that are given both a delicate and hard-rocking treatment: delicate in the form of melodic, mellow ballads, and hard rocking when Collins’s fiddles battle it out with McNally’s fuzzy, blazing guitar, particularly on traditional instrumental jigs. Although not as sophisticated and instrumentally accomplished as a FAIRPORT CONVENTION or a STEELEYE SPAN, for example, MUSHROOM’s release is still worth a spin despite the average sound quality, if only for the pleasure of hearing some vintage psychedelia given a nifty Celtic folk treatment.
