The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy

Hang On Sloopy is a hit song by the pop group The McCoys which was #1 in America in October 1965 and is the official rock song of the U.S. state of Ohio. It was written by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell and is named for Dorothy Sloop, a singer born in Steubenville, Ohio on September 26, 1913 who used the name "Sloopy" on stage. She died July 1998 in Pass Christian, Mississippi.
The song was originally titled "My Girl Sloopy" and was first recorded by The Vibrations in 1964 on Atlantic Records (45-2222), becoming a top thirty hit. It has also been recorded by Arseno Rodriguez (Bang 1966), The Supremes (Motown 1966), The Kingsmen (WAND 1966), Little Caesar and the Consuls, and The Yardbirds.
In 1965, The Strangeloves, a rock band who purported to be from Australia, decided to make the song the follow-up to their hit single "I Want Candy", and began performing the song in concert. However, the Dave Clark Five, who they were touring with, told the Strangeloves that they were going to record their own version of the song, copying the Strangeloves' arrangement. The Strangeloves realized that the Dave Clark Five's version would probably outsell their own, but they were still enjoying success with "I Want Candy" and did not want to release a new single yet. So the trio—who were, in reality, three successful writer/producers from Brooklyn, New York--recruited a group from Dayton, Ohio, Rick and the Raiders, to record the song instead. The group's name was changed to The McCoys (to avoid confusion with another popular band of the era, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and their 16-year-old leader, Rick Zehringer, became known as Rick Derringer. The single was released on Bang Records. It entered the chart on August 14, 1965, effectively beating the Dave Clark Five to the charts. The single went on to hit number one on October 2.
I received a message from Rick Derringer: "I am Rick Derringer, and I can tell you that whoever said that we added GUITAR AND VOCALS TO AN ALREADY COMPLETED BACKUP TRACK WAS : DEAD WRONG! As the guitarist and lead singer of THE McCOYS, I was there at the time. We recorded the backup track with our drummer playing, and myself, on guitar, but not with our bassist, Randy Jo Hobbs. After it was headed toward number 1 on the charts, The STRANGELOVES then used OUR track for their upcoming album. We also played on thier version of: IN THE NIGHT TIME."
So I removed the litigious sentence.

Beau Brummels - San Fran Sessions (1964-66)

The Beau Brummels was a successful 1960s American rock band, formed in San Francisco in 1963. Their sound was influenced by the Beatles and other British bands of the era, as well as by such American groups as the Kingston Trio and the Everly Brothers.
The band took its name from a 19th Century English dandy, Beau Brummell, as a way of identifying with the British music scene. Additionally, band members figured that since everyone was looking for and at Beatles records, having a name that naturally followed Beatles alphabetically would be a shrewd move. In addition, the band took to wearing British-influenced mod clothes. As a result of their sound and look they were often mistaken for an English band, especially in their first few years. However, as their music progressed they mixed the British sound with American folk and country music and created a distincly American sound.
The Beau Brummels had three Top 40 hit singles: "Laugh Laugh", "Just A Little" and "You Tell Me Why". "Just a Little" was the biggest hit of the three, spending 9 weeks in the Top 40 and reaching #8 on Billboard, while "Laugh, Laugh" hit #15, and "You Tell Me Why" peaked at #38.
The Beau Brummels recorded six studio albums as well, with Triangle and Bradley's Barn receiving significant critical acclaim.
"Laugh, Laugh" is listed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 most influential songs that shaped rock and roll, and was also featured in the 1989 John Candy film Uncle Buck. On "The Flintstones", in the episode based on the "Shindig" TV series, there was a version of the "The Beau Brummelstones" singing their hit "Laugh Laugh." The Beau Brummels are considered to be the first folk rock group, and influenced numerous other acts in the genre, particularly later San Francisco groups including Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead.

John Cale - 1983-02-08 Vredenburg Utrecht

Cale was born in Garnant in the heavily industrial Amman Valley, and Welsh is his first language. Having discovered a talent for piano, he studied music at Goldsmiths College, the University of London, and travelled to the USA to continue his musical training, thanks to the help and influence of Aaron Copland.
Arriving at New York City, he met a number of influential composers. With John Cage and several others, Cale participated in an 18-hour piano-playing marathon that was the first full-length performance of Erik Satie's "Vexations". More significantly, Cale played in La Monte Young's ensemble the Theater of Eternal Music (also known as the Dream Syndicate, which should not be confused with the 1980s band of the same name). The heavily drone-laden music he played there proved to be a big influence in his work with his next group, the Velvet Underground.
After leaving the Velvet Underground, Cale produced a number of albums, including Nico's The Marble Index and The Stooges' debut, and began to make solo records. His first, Vintage Violence came in 1970, following which he collaborated with yet another classical musician, Terry Riley, on the mainly instrumental Church of Anthrax. Cale also appeared on Nick Drake's second album, Bryter Layter, playing viola and harpsicord on two of the album's tracks. His solo record of 1973, Paris 1919, is regarded by many as a classic. It is made up of elegantly crafted and tastefully arranged songs with arcane and complex lyrics, apparently with underlying political concerns.

Heldon - Allez Teia

For Heldon’s second offering, Richard Pinhas had the benefit of a close partnership shared with guitarist George Grunblatt, who also collaborated on mellotron and some additional synthesizer. Alain Renaud and Alain Bellaiche also make some guest appearances on acoustic guitar and bass, respectively. All in all, an innovative facet in this Heldon album is the featured acoustic guitar: a couple of acoustic guitar duets were written by Grunblatt, which is kind of an odd thing in the repertoire of a project focused on electronic experimentation and electric guitar soundscapes a-la Fripp. In fact, most of the tracks are pretty much patterned in the mold of Fripp-Eno’s “No Pussyfooting”, and even the opening track has the title ‘In the Wake of the King Fripp’ – it almost seems like Pinhas wanted to make 110 % sure that the audience were aware of his major influence, so he even included a specific name in a track title.

The Fugs - Electromagnetic Steamboat

The Fugs were the quintessential satirical/political group of the sixties, the foremost parodists of the Establishment and defenders of the counterculture. Their obscene, agit-prop vignettes updated a tradition that dated from Chuck Berry's early hits and predated Frank Zappa's operettas. Their use and abuse of cacophony and collage was way ahead of their time.
After cutting a few pretty rough (but brilliant) albums for the ESP label they somehow got a contract with Frank Sinatra's Reprise label and put out 4 more works of brilliance: TENDERNESS JUNCTION; IT CRAWLED INTO MY HAND, HONEST!; THE BELLE OF AVENUE 'A' and GOLDEN FILTH. All these records are here COMPLETE on the first two cds. The third disc has some stuff they cut for Atlantic Records that was never released by that label although some of these tunes made it to "Tenderness Junction" in a remixed or slightly different version. Especially entertaining here is Ed Sanders' 15 minute 'Prom Night' monologue right before they sing their doowop classic, the immortal "Wet Dream."

Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy - Live at Ronnie Scott's 10-06-87

A stunning performance, highly recommended. Several sources refer to this disc as a soundboard but it's actually an excellent quality audience recording. Recorded in a small club, it does not have the "boominess" associated with many audience recordings. Buddy Guy's guitar is clearly audible, and at the same volume level in the mix as EC's - this is not the case with the soundboard material recorded and broadcast from the show, in which Guy's guitar is very low in the mix and almost inaudible. A careful listen during quiet passages reveals that all instruments have some room reverb, as opposed to the "close" sound associated with being close-miked. In particular, listen carefully on headphones during the (stunning) performance of "Wanna Make Love to You" and the room echo on all instruments is easy to identify during quiet passages. "Wanna Make Love" is one of the down-and-dirtiest, funky, greasy blues numbers you will ever hear - this is one that will grow hair on your chest.

Gary Davis - Pure Religion & Bad Company

If you only know Gary Davis because Hot Tuna covered some of his tunes it's time to do some serious listening, and this is the disc with which to do it.
It was recorded in 1957 when Davis was about sixty years old, and at that moment he had as much power and imagination in his playing as he'd had as a younger musician, while at the same time having reached a level of control that only comes with decades of experience. His tempos are not as frantic as those on his 1930s sides, and his playing is even better. It's always been a problem to capture the sheer "squeeze power" of a street performer like Davis, and this recording does so better than any of his others. And at exactly the right time in his life, for in all his later recordings except "Harlem Street Singer" - magnificent as they may be - his age shows to a lesser or greater degree.

Principal Edwards Magic Theatre - Soundtrack

Formed at Exeter University in the late sixties (their name was apparently inspired by the head of the university), Principal Edwards Magic Theatre were more a multi-media enterprise than a rock group, appearing with dancers and lightshows. John Peel signed them to his Dandelion label and helped produce their albums. They also appeared regularly on his 'Top Gear' show. One of the main assets was lead vocalist, Vivienne McAuliffe, whose crystal clear voice helped make them a little special. Their music was innovative and imaginative with a strong folk influence and an air of mysticism.

John Dummers Band - John Dummers Band

This blues outfit formed in the Summer of 1967 in London. By the beginning of 1968 Tony Walker and Roger Pearce had both quit the music business. The line-up was playing a solid Chicago-styled blues. In July 1968 they turned professional. By now Steve Rye had departed for Simon and Steve and Tony McPhee, a friend of Dave Kelly's, came in on guitar. However, McPhee's stay was brief - a few month later he left to join The Groundhogs. Their two albums for Mercury are the most sought-after by collectors, this is the second one.

Barry McGuire - Anthology

Barry McGuire has never deserved his "one hit wonder" status. The problem obviously is that his most memorable hit EVE OF DESTRUCTION so totally overwhelmed an unexpecting audience that it left listeners stunned. Although he had previously recorded several albums with The New Christy Minstrels, scoring a hit with GREEN, GREEN (featuring Barry McGuire), the world of 1965 was completely unprepared for the depth of emotion, both raw and plaintive, in EVE.
Mr. McGuire appears to have lived the life of a rebel, while most record reviewers would be happy if he had only sung about it. The "smart" thing for him to do would have been to sit back and craft a string of songs that sounded exactly like Eve, but he moved on with his life, leaving the public still struggling with the power of his first solo hit. Barry McGuire's contribution to music has continued through the decades, with little of it currently available to the buying public.
