The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues
Led by the literate singer/songwriter Mike Scott, the group' sole constant member, the mercurial Waterboys formed in London in 1981. Born December 14, 1958 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Scott first became involved in music as the creator of the fanzine Jungleland, and later played in a series of local punk outfits. After college, where he studied English and philosophy, Scott and his band, Another Pretty Face, moved to London; following the group's break-up, he formed the Waterboys, so named after a line in the Lou Reed song "The Kids" but wholly appropriate given Scott's recurring lyrical fascination with sea imagery.
A newspaper advertisement calling for musicians led to a response from multi-instrumentalist Anthony Thistlethwaite; along with drummer Kevin Wilkinson, the Waterboys issued their self-titled debut in 1983. Keyboardist Karl Wallinger and trumpeter Roddy Lorimer joined for the 1984 follow-up A Pagan Place, which expanded the group's rich, dramatic sound while further exploring Scott's interest in spirituality. With 1985's This Is the Sea, the Waterboys reached an early peak; a majestic, ambitious record, it earned the group a significant hit with the single "The Whole of the Moon."
However, after the album's release, Wallinger departed to form World Party, which prompted Scott and Thistlethwaite to relocate to Ireland and begin with a clean slate. When the Waterboys returned in 1988 with the acclaimed Fisherman's Blues, they were joined by traditional Irish players like fiddler Steve Wickham, drummer Dave Ruffy, keyboardist Guy Chambers and bassist Marco Weissman, resulting in a stripped-down, folky sound that was continued on 1990's Room to Roam.

Led Zeppelin - Earl's Court May 24, 1975
The most famous of the five nights at Earls Court, largely because it has long been available in a near complete soundboard recording. The many releases used a combination of the video soundtrack and a proper soundboard source tape. However this was incomplete, running for only 180 minutes. Several years ago Celebration released the 4CD Odysseus, which should and could have been much better. More soundboard tape was used (in Dazed and Confused and for Moby Dick), but there were still gaps in the acoustic section which should have been filled by the audience source. Recently however even more of the soundboard source tape appeared, and this was used by Watch Tower for their 4CD release To Be A Rock And Not To Roll. The gaps were carefully filled with an excellent audience tape. Unfortunately, like so many of Watch Tower's releases, this was again spoilt by numerous digital 'clicks' and 'ticks'. Empress Valley rush released the 4CD He Must Be Dazed And Confused to counteract this. The sound quality is similar to Watch Tower, perhaps a very small improvement, but the big gain is in the strength of Robert Plant's voice, which is much louder and clearer in this new version. Again the gaps have been filled with an excellent audience tape.

Led Zeppelin - Earl's Court May 25, 1975
This release is undoubtably the most important and exciting release of an Earls Court concert for a very long time. A virtually complete soundboard source tape has been discovered, and used to dramatic effect. In fact the sound quality rivals the previous night, it is simply superb. Again the gaps have been filled with the audience tape (the end of No Quarter and parts of the acoustic section are missing from the soundboard and have been filled with the audience recording). Thank goodness Empress Valley did not repeate their complete howler as they did for the New York 29th July 1973 soundboard release (Grand Finale), by using the previous night's soundboard to fill the gaps. Therefore this last night, all 222 minutes of it, is destined to become a classic, much sought after by fans. Wishing to capitalize on this Empress Valley subsequently released the last night as a seperate 4CD set called The Zeppelin Express Physical Rocket.

The Move - The BBC Sessions (1967-1968)
The Move played their first shows in early 1966, and became known for their elaborate vocal arrangements, and for their taste in soul music, and American West Coast bands The Beach Boys, the Byrds, Love and Moby Grape.
In mid-1966 the group moved its operations to London, where they took up the residency at the famous Marquee Club which had recently been vacated by The Who.
They proceeded to release a string of pop singles which also captured the psychedelia of London's underground. Their debut single, Night Of Fear, penned by Roy Wood and featuring a riff from the 1812 Overture, climbed to No 2, laying the foundation for their subsequent success. The follow-up, I Can Hear The Grass Grow, consolidated their flirtation with psychedelia, which had been partly inaugurated by an appearance at the 14-Hour Technicolour Dream multi-media event at London's Alexandra Palace on 29 April 1967. The single peaked at No 5. Their next effort, Flowers In The Rain, was publicised with a postcard of the then premier, Harold Wilson, naked in his bath and as a result of his successful legal action all royalties from the record were donated to charity. An excellent single (the 'B' side, (Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree, was superb too) it was also the first record to be played on BBC Radio One when it opened on 30 September 1967, after the Labour government's Marine Offences Act had outlawed the exciting era of offshore pirate radio.

Led Zeppelin - The Destroyer Richfield Coliseum, Cleveland, Ohio 04/27/77
"No Quarter" was recorded in 1972 at Island Studios, London. It was engineered by Andy Johns and also mixed by Johns at Olympic Studios, London.
During live performances of this song Jones would improvise on keyboards and often play bits of classical music. The song took on a very mysterious texture on stage as many lights and simulated fog were used. On Led Zeppelin's 1975 and later tours, John Paul Jones would also play a short piano concerto (on a grand piano) frequently turning the seven-minute song into a performance exceeding twenty minutes. He was particularly fond of playing Rachmaninoff pieces, but sometimes included snatches of Amazing Grace and also Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez which had inspired Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain. One incredible version of the song, recorded at the Kingdome in Seattle in 1977, is an epic thirty six minutes, where, after the piano solo, Jones leads the group into a rip-roaring R&B based jam, as a lead in to the guitar solo proper (similar versions can also be heard on the "Destroyer" bootleg).

Ugly Ducklings - Too Much Too Soon
Formed in the spring of 1965 as The Strolling Bones, a blatant Rolling Stones-inspired outfit featuring Brian Jones look-a-like, British-born Glyn Bell. After making its live debut at Cedarbrae High School in Toronto's Scarborough district (the entire band minus Boers studied there), the group changed name to The Ugly Ducklings and won a residency at Charlie Brown's Place. In late 1965, the band attracted the attention of Yorktown Records, who recorded the group's debut single, the Bingham-Mayne collaboration, Nothin' for a mere $300 on a 2-track machine at Hallmark Studios. The record was picked by local radio and became a local smash in March of the following year. On the back of the single's success, the 'Ducks landed their dream gig - opening for the Stones at Maple Leaf Gardens in June 1966.
The group's debut album Somewhere Outside, recorded in New York and Toronto was issued around this time and contained all of the group's early singles. The opening cut, Nothin', was also their finest moment, with its snotty punk vocals and guitar assault. She Ain't No Use To Me was a punk shouter with some snappy guitar work, whilst That's Just A Thought I Had In My Mind is more restrained, veering more towards pop. Also of note on the album were Do What You Want, a mid-paced beat number; Just In Case You Wonder, which featured some good fuzz guitar; Hey Mama (Keep Your Big Mouth Shut), notable for some fine psychedelic guitar work; a snotty version of Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Any More, the only non-original and the closing cut, Windy City (Noise At The North End), an atmospheric instrumental complete with sound effects and more fuzz guitar.

Aksak Maboul - Un Peu De L'Ame Des Bandits
In late 1977 Aksak Maboul started performing live, during which time Wuyts replaced Joris and Moulin. In early 1979, Hollander invited Chris Cutler and Fred Frith of the recently defunct avant-garde rock group Henry Cow to join Aksak Maboul on their next record. They rehearsed together, performed in a few concerts and then went to Sunrise Studio, Kirchberg in Switzerland to recorded Un Peu de L'Ame des Bandits.
Un Peu de L'Ame des Bandits is more intense and experimental than their first album. It contains complex written sections as well as improvised ambient pieces. It uses sampling before samplers were invented and is a mixture of tangos, Turkish tunes, chamber rock, noisy punk rock and pseudo-Varèse music. Like the first album, it is instrumental with a little singing and voices.

Aksak Maboul - Onze Danses pour Combattre la Migraine
Aksak Maboul (originally spelt Aqsak Maboul) were a Belgian avant-garde rock band founded in 1977 by Marc Hollander and Vincent Kenis. They made two studio albums, Onze Danses Pour Combattre la Migraine (1977) and Un Peu de L'Ame des Bandits (1979), the last one with ex-Henry Cow members Chris Cutler and Fred Frith. They were also active in the Rock in Opposition movement.
Aksak Maboul began in 1977 as Marc Hollander (keyboards), Vincent Kenis (accordion, guitar, bass guitar), Marc Moulin (keyboards) and Chris Joris (percussion, keyboards). With this line-up, plus guests Frank Wuyts (percussion, keyboards), Catherine Jauniaux (voice), Denis van Hecke (cello), Michel Berckmans of Univers Zéro (bassoon, oboe) and others, they recorded their first album, Onze Danses Pour Combattre la Migraine (French for "Eleven Dances to Fight a Migraine").
Onze Danses Pour Combattre la Migraine is a playful mix of musical forms, cultures and genres. With primitive drum machines and looping organ lines, it shuffles between improvised jazz, ethnic music, electronics and classical music. It was largely an instrumental album with snatches of singing and voices.

Them - Now and Them
Them was a Northern Irish band formed in Belfast in 1963, best known for the garage rock standard "Gloria" and launching singer Van Morrison's career.
In mid 1966, Van Morrison left the group to pursue a solo career. The rest of the band continued on into the early 1970s, releasing four albums and touring steadily after relocating to California around 1967. Two of these post-Morrison albums, Now And Them and Time Out! Time In For Them, found the band experimenting with psychedelia. Van Morrison went on to greater success and fame as a solo artist, but Them's combination of garage rock, blues, and soul proved a major influence on the next generation of rock musicians, and the group's best-known singles have become staples of rock and roll.

Guru Guru - UFO
Guru Guru's classic debut album has to be one of the definitive moments in the Krautrock chronology. It is a monster work, and one which severely assaults the consciousness with waves of desert scorched guitar lashes along with acid laced, enchantingly amorphous rhythmic pulsing. On first listen the album appears sloppy, disjointed, confused and almost incomprehensible. Further listens will reveal a well of focused, completely intentional creative drive that makes UFO one of Krautrock's most immense sonic statements. Open minded listeners, and fans of the kind of cosmic jamming that typify many of the other guitar oriented Krautrock bands, will no doubt adore the album. While lacking the up-tempo, driving fury of say, Ash Ra Tempel's debut, UFO finds Guru Guru creating hulking, downbeat walls of guitar drenched intensity. Like Black Sabbath on an orgasmic acid trip, the rhythm section shows little regard for set "beats", time signatures and the like, preferring to create bruising heaps of bass grooves and cymbal crashes, speeding up, slowing down and falling completely off the tracks as they see fit. Above this, guitarist Axel Genrich contributes layers of blistering guitar, guiding the band from climax to shivering cataclysm.
