Fairport Convention - Angel Delight
In which Richard Thompson exits the Fairport lineup, and the band is reduced to a quartet of Simon Nicol, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg, and Dave Mattacks. The loss of big guns Ashley Hutchings, Thompson and Sandy Denny was felt, but amazingly, although it isn't nearly as well known as Liege and Lief or Full House, this record reached the highest chart position of any Fairport LP, making number eight in England. Swarbrick led the group in even more of a traditional British folk vein.

Christopher - Christopher
This Texas outfit's psychedelic/progressive album has been increasingly attracting attention from collectors in recent years. It combines some fine fuzzy psychedelic guitar work on tracks like Dark Road, In Your Time, Disaster and The Wind, whilst Magic Cycles leans towards the progressive genre. Well worth a listen.
Formed in 1968 in Houston, Texas and known as United Gas. When they landed a contract with Metromedia, a name change was suggested to avoid confusion with Pacific Gas and Electric, although the band continued to perform as United Gas.
During the recording of the album, the drummer Doug Tull was having severe problems with drugs. He attempted suicide, was fired, and the LP was completed using session musicians. Tull then formed Josefus; he would eventually commit suicide.

Captain Beefheart - Safe as Milk (Remastered with Bonus Tracks)
Don Van Vliet was chiefly a singer, but was also a capable harmonica player, and occasionally played noisy, untrained free jazz-influenced saxophone. His compositions are characterized by their odd mixtures of shifting time signatures and by their surreal lyrics, while Van Vliet himself is noted for his dictatorial approach to his musicians and for his enigmatic relationship with the public.
Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band signed to A&M Records and released two 1966 singles, a version of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy" followed by "Moonchild" written by David Gates. Both were local Los Angeles hits. The band was by now beginning to play "underground" venues such as the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco.
Some time in 1966 demos of what became the Safe as Milk material were submitted to A&M. Jerry Moss (the M in A&M) reportedly described the new direction as "too negative" and they were dropped from the label. But by the end of 1966 they were signed to Buddah Records.
The Safe as Milk material needed much more work, and the 20-year-old Ry Cooder was asked to help. They began recording in Spring 1967, with Richard Perry producing (his first job as producer). Cooder did not hang around long after the album was recorded. The album was finally released in September 1967.

Recorded on July 28, 1966, California Hall, San Francisco, CA before the band had cut any studio material, this performance was one of Janis Joplin's first gigs with Big Brother. The Flaming Lips - Austin City Limits September 17 2006
Although the Flaming Lips take an indie rock/post-punk approach to rock music, the band is known for their lush, multi-layered, psychedelic arrangements and their Lispacey lyrics and bizarre song titles (for example, "Pilot Can at the Queer of God", "Free Radicals (A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading With A Suicide Bomber)" or "Yeah, I Know It's A Drag... But Wastin' Pigs Is Still Radical"). They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows featuring fursuits, balloons, puppets, video projections and complex stage light configurations. In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 bands to see before you die". In the September 2006 issue of Spin magazine, the band was ranked #16 in the article "The 25 Greatest Live Bands Now."

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band - The Lost Elektra Sessions
Paul Butterfield was the first white harmonica player to develop a style original and powerful enough to place him in the pantheon of true blues greats. It's impossible to overestimate the importance of the doors Butterfield opened: before he came to prominence, white American musicians treated the blues with cautious respect, afraid of coming off as inauthentic. Not only did Butterfield clear the way for white musicians to build upon blues tradition (instead of merely replicating it), but his storming sound was a major catalyst in bringing electric Chicago blues to white audiences who'd previously considered acoustic Delta blues the only really genuine article. His initial recordings from the mid-'60s -- featuring the legendary, racially integrated first edition of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band -- were eclectic, groundbreaking offerings that fused electric blues with rock & roll, psychedelia, jazz, and even (on the classic East-West) Indian classical music. As members of that band -- which included Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop -- drifted away, the overall impact of Butterfield's music lessened, even if his amplified harp playing was still beyond reproach. He had largely faded from the scene by the mid-'70s, and fell prey to health problems and drug addiction that sadly claimed his life prematurely. Even so, the enormity of Butterfield's initial impact ensured that his legacy was already secure. All but one of these 19 tracks were recorded in December, 1964, as Butterfield's projected first LP; the results were scrapped and replaced by their official self-titled debut, cut a few months later. With both Bloomfield and Bishop already in tow, these sessions rank among the earliest blues-rock ever laid down. Extremely similar in feel to the first album, it's perhaps a bit rawer in production and performance, but not appreciably worse or different than what ended up on the actual debut LP. Dedicated primarily to electric Chicago blues standards, Butterfield fans will find this well worth acquiring, as most of the selections were never officially recorded by the first lineup.

Magic Carpet - Magic Carpet
A mystical Eastern-sounding psychedelic folk album which was produced and engineered by Vic Keary at Chalk Farm Studios in the Winter of 1971/2. All the tracks are self-penned, half of them by the vocalist Alisha alone.
The band had formed at the beginning of the seventies. Alisha Sufit had a haunting voice ideally suited to the blend of Indian and Western music available on this album. Clem Alford was a classically-trained sitar player who'd travelled to India to learn more about Indian classical music. In 1971 they discovered Mushroom Records, which specialised in Indian-related recordings and has gone on to become a very collectable label. Sadly the band split up before the resulting album was released so it was never properly promoted. Mushroom were getting into financial difficulties in any case and could only afford to finance a limited pressing of 1,000 copies, which sold slowly over the next half dozen years.
What of the album? Well, the tracks are basically of two types. There are the pleasant, Eastern-sounding instrumentals typified by the title track, Alan's Christmas Card and Take Away Kesh and the tracks that showcase Alisha Sufit's delicate vocals like The Phoenix, Black Cat, Peace Song and High Street.

Incredible String Band - Changing Horses
1969 brought the ISB a set at the Woodstock festival and a moving away from drugs, a leaning toward Scientology, and an appropriately titled album, Changing Horses.
Somewhat less focused than their previous albums, it featured the inclusion of electric instruments. Still, it contained some great tunes, including "Big Ted" (about a pig who broke into their farmhouse and devoured half of their record collection), "White Bird," "Dust be Diamonds" (the only Heron-Williamson collaboration), and the lovely "Creation," which had piano played by Ivan Pawle of the ISB spin-off band Dr. Strangely Strange.

Incredible String Band - Big Huge
Their biggest-selling album, reaching number five in the UK, was The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter. This moved on from the previous album and contained a varied mix of folky songs. Mike Heron's A Very Cellular Song was much longer than anything else and wove together different sounds while telling a tale of amoebae.
Next up was a double album Wee Tam & The Big Huge (note that this was reissued on CD with the UK edition two single albums). By this stage Mike and Robin had been joined by their girlfriends Rose Simpson and Licorice (Likky) McKechnie. It is widely argued that this was the peak of the String Band's creativity and they sparked intermittently after this. Mike and Robin became involved in scientology and this may have had the effect of removing the critical element necessary to create the outstanding music that they were known for.

Incredible String Band - The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion
The group came together in the mid-1960s. Clive and Robin had been playing together at Clive's Incredible Folk Club, a small folk club in Saucihall Street in Glasgow. They built up quite a following including Billy Connolly and Mike Heron, who later joined on guitar. They were a trio when Joe Boyd visited the club having heard about the band. He signed them to Elektra and they completed their first album, The Incredible String Band released in 1966. This showcased the fine writing talents of the three members and already showed, to a small extent, that they were moving beyond the usual folk style. Robin's October Song from this album has become a classic and is highly rated by Bob Dylan.
Keen to capitalise on their success the band split up! Robin went to Morocco while Clive disappeared to Afganistan for some time. However, Mike and Robin teamed up again and from then on they formed the core of the Incredible String Band. The second album was a major turning point and ranks as a classic today. 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion was released in 1967 and captured the spirit of the year, albeit in a very different way to much of what was around at the time. The sleeve was eye-catching, designed by The Fool who had painted the murals for the Apple boutique. the album established the String Band amongst the underground and brought world music to a "more mainstream" audience, if that is not a contradiction. During his travels Robin had picked up numerous instruments including a stringed instrument called a gimbri. Mike had learned sitar amongst other things. 5000 Spirits is almost exotic with its blend of unusual instruments alongside some highly creative lyrics and Mike and Robin's distinctive vocal styles.

East Of Eden - Snafu
Snafu is an eclectic blend of psychedelia, jazz, blues, folk, celtic, eastern, and various forms of world music. Instruments include bass, flute, sax and alto sax, trumpet, drums and guitar - and keyboards are largely dispensed with in favor of Dave Arbus's electric violin which provides plenty of texture and background, as well as taking the lead in many passages. There are long sections driven by a jazzy bass guitar playing with almost loop-like repetition, while solo spots are taken in turn by guitar, violin, flute and sax. Vocals are sparse, which is fortunate as Geoff Nicholson's singing isn't strong.

The Incredible String Band - The Chelsea Sessions 1967
Among the many surprising musical hybrids that emerged during the late 1960s, the Incredible String Band had to be one of the strangest and most wonderful. The Chelsea Sessions consists of 13 pristine studio demos that Robin Williamson and Mike Heron recorded with Joe Boyd shortly before they laid down their landmark album, The 5000 Spirits or The Layers of the Onion. Included are alternate versions of six songs that made it onto 5000 Spirits, notably a solo take of Williamson's "First Girl I Loved" and a spry reading of Heron's "Little Cloud." The other seven tracks include the first ISB versions released of "Lover Man" (a vivid, ornate piece of pastoral chamber blues that Heron gave to Al Stewart for his first album) and "God Dog" (a spooky tome that Shirley Collins released, recorded here with her sister Dolly on pipe organ). Unlike many archival demo recordings, the tracks on The Chelsea Sessions are fully realized renditions of some of the duo's most compelling music and are essential listening for those who have fallen under the ISB's spell.

John's Children - Smashed Blocked
UK hippy/progressive rock band formed '64 as R&B band the Few (later renamed Silence). Discovered by pop impresario/ Yardbird manager Simon Napier Bell, they recorded "The Love I Thought I'd Found'/"Just What You Want, Just What You Get' for Columbia/EMI with lineup of Andy Ellison, vocals; Geoff McLelland, guitar; Chris Townson, drums; John Hewlett, bass. McLelland was replaced by Marc Bolan, a Napier Bell protégé who later became a solo star; EMI rejected "Not The Sort of Girl (You'd Take To Bed)' and album Orgasm '67, though latter was issued in USA on White Whale, finally by UK indie Cherry Red '82 as an historical artifact with extra tracks. (The phoney "live' album had audience from Beatle film soundtrack added.) They signed to Who management's Track label and released "Desdemona', a Bolan tune banned for mildly suggestive lyric. Live shows were legendary, especially Fourteen Hour Technicolour Dream on 29/30 April '67 at London's Alexandra Palace, where Bolan caused ear-splitting feedback; other shows featured violence that caused a riot in Germany; they were thrown off a tour supporting Who. Bolan left to form Tyrannosaurus Rex after arguments about follow-up "A Midsummer Night's Scene'; another Bolan song "Go Go Girl' released after his departure later turned up in Rex repertoire as "Mustang Ford'; to milk the last of his departed talent, B-side of "Desdemona' ("Remember Thomas A Becket') was reworked as "Come And Play With Me In The Garden'. They split after another disastrous tour of Germany.

Agincourt - Fly Away
An ultra-rare privately-pressed album by the same group of people responsible for Alice Through The Looking Glass, Ithaca and Tomorrow Come Some Day, Peter Howell and John Ferdinando.
This particular album is folkier than Ithaca, for example, but like the latter still has a strong Moody Blues influence, particularly on the best track Through The Eyes Of A Lifetime, which begins with a poem and ends with some lovely piano-dominated instrumentation. The opening cut When I Awoke is a very pleasant folky number with some lovely female vocals. Next up is Though I May Be Dreaming, which has a gorgeous acoustic guitar intro and more delicious female vocals. There's some nice flute work on instrumental Joy In The Finding, Dawn and Kind Sir. All My Life is a nice piano-led piece with a spooky sounding ending. All the material is written by either Ferdinando or Howell. This album reissue is essential for fans of progressive folk.
Peter Howell is a musician and composer best known for his work, as a member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, on Doctor Who. Howell's musical career began in the late 1960s working with John Ferdinando in various psych folk bands including Agincourt and Ithaca. His psych folk work also included a musical version of Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass and a comedy musical entitled Tomorrow Come Someday. Together, Howell and Ferdinando recorded five albums before Howell became a member of the Radiophonic Workshop. In 1970 he became a studio manager at the BBC and in 1974 he joined the Radiophonic Workshop with which he would associated until 1997.

Can - Out of Reach
Out of Reach is the tenth Can album. This album has been disowned by the band and is neither available on their Spoon label or listed on their official website's discography, as the former Traffic members (Rosko Gee and Reebop Kwaku Baah) who worked on this album are considered to have had too great an influence to make it a genuine Can album, and on top of this, Can's original bassist and pivotal band member Holger Czukay has absolutely no involvement in this album whatsoever and drummer Jaki Liebezeit has a very limited part.
Rosko Gee takes lead vocal on "Pauper's Daughter and I" and "Give Me No Roses", and is credited with writing these two tracks.

Goldebriars - Straight Ahead
The GoldeBriars were an early-60s folk quartet which is most notable for including a young Curt Boettcher as a guitarist and vocalist. The group also included two sisters, Dotti and Sheri Holmberg, and Ron Neilson, lead guitarist & banjo player. They recorded two very obscure albums for Epic Records in 1964 before adding drummer Ron Edgar to their lineup, who would later be a part of the groups The Music Machine and The Millennium. They recorded a third album in late 1964, in what has been described as a prototypical folk-rock vein. A single from this proposed album, June Bride Baby b/w I'm Gonna Marry You was released in early 1965, but the group broke up afterwards and the album remains unreleased. Curt Boettcher would go on a successful stint as a producer, songwriter and musician, eventually putting together the highly-regarded late-60s group The Millennium (which also featured Ron Edgar).

Guru Guru - Live ´98 in Finkenbach
GURU GURU were one of the wildest and most imaginative bands to emerge from the 1970`s Krautrock scene and gave definition to the term. Fulled by a combination of LSD and loud raunchy experimental music which might seem to be unstructured, it indeed incorporated many styles, from jazz to pop. These influences became more and more evident as the band’s career progressed.
The constant member was drummer Mani Nuemier and the band up to the mid-1970`s led a communal life. Guitarist Ax Genrich formerly of AGITATION FREE and bass player Uli Trepte completed the trio which remained intact until 1973 when Trepte went solo and was replaced by jazz man Hans Hartman whose playing resembled that of John Wetton in KING CRIMSON. GURU GURU`s music in the early 1970`s, as many will say was the absolutely freakiest of the day and sometimes had an outright deranged sense of humor on behalf of Mani Nuemier. A turning point for the band came in 1974 with the replacement of Genrich on guitar with ex-Eiliff guitarist Houschang Nejadepour who brought eastern sensibilities to the band as well as a more streamlined sound. They almost sounded like a reincarnation of the MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA of 1972 minus the violin and keyboards.

That's Soul - The Most Legendary Soul Artists
Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and James Brown are considered the earliest pioneers of soul music. Solomon Burke's early recordings for Atlantic Records codified the style, and his early 1960s recordings Cry to Me, Just Out of Reach and Down in the Valley are considered classics of the genre. Peter Guralnick writes, "it was only with the coming together of Burke and Atlantic Records that you could see anything resembling a movement."
In Memphis, Tennessee, Stax Records produced recordings by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Don Covay (who also recorded in New York City for Atlantic). Joe Tex's 1965 The Love You Save is a classic soul recording. An important center of soul music recording was Florence, Alabama, where the Fame Studios operated. Jimmy Hughes, Percy Sledge and Arthur Alexander recorded at Fame; Aretha Franklin recorded in the area later in the 1960s. Fame Studios, often referred to as Muscle Shoals (after a town neighboring Florence), enjoyed a close relationship with Stax, and many of the musicians and producers who worked in Memphis contributed to recordings done in Alabama.
Aretha Franklin's 1967 album I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You is considered one of the most important 1960s soul recordings, featuring her biggest hit, Respect.

Aretha Franklin's 1967 recordings, such as I Never Loved a Man That Way I Love You, Respect (originally sung by Otis Redding), and Do Right Woman-Do Right Man, are considered to be the apogee of the soul music genre, and were among its most commercially successful productions. During this period, Stax artists such as Eddie Floyd and Johnnie Taylor made significant contributions to soul music. Howard Tate's recordings in the late 1960s for Verve Records, and later for Atlantic (produced by Jerry Ragovoy) are another important body of work in the soul genre.
By 1968, the soul music movement had begun to splinter, as James Brown and Sly & the Family Stone began to expand upon and abstract both soul and rhythm and blues into other forms. As Guralnick writes, "More than anything else, though, what seems to me to have brought the era of soul to a grinding, unsettling halt was the death of Martin Luther King in April of 1968."

Xtabay This One is for You - Vampyros Lesbos Sexadelic Dance Party
Vampyros Lesbos is a 1971 film directed by Jesus Franco. It's an erotic horror tale inspired by Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. The main character, Linda Westinghouse (played by Ewa Strömberg), is a young lawyer who travels on a job assignment to an island where she meets the mysterious young and beautiful countess Carody (Soledad Miranda).
The film is considered by many to be one of Franco's best and a cult classic of European Exploitation film. Its score, composed by Manfred Hübler and Siegfried Schwab also gained a cult following when it was rereleased.
German composers Manfred Hubler and Siegfried Schwab (recording as Vampires' Sound Incorporation) created music sufficiently groovy and go-go to accompany Franco's freaked-out vision. Their crazy sounds are a speed-hopped swinger's bash of blaring trumpet, booming trombone, slinky organ, and spacy sitar, with a beefy foundation of mod guitar, bass, and drums. Eccentrically titled instrumentals like "The Lions and the Cucumber," "Droge CX 9," and "The Six Wisdoms of Aspasia" manage to be psychedelic in the way of both the Doors' haunting rock and the Fifth Dimension's up-up-and-away pop. Music ripe for revival, Sexadelic Dance Party falls somewhere between the glorious lounge orchestrations of Esquivel and the cheap Casio-funk porn music championed by bands like the Beastie Boys. It's just one more nugget mined from the overflowing heaps of past decades' trash culture.

Giles, Giles And Fripp - The Cheerful Insanity of
Formed in Bournemouth in August 1967 after the Giles brothers had left Trendsetters Limited. In September of that year, they moved up to London but found gigs hard to come by. Eventually, they got a residency at a restaurant in Jermyn Street, backing an Italian singer but it only lasted a few days and they found themselves gigless again. In June 1968, Ian McDonald and former Fairport Convention singer Judy Dyble were recruited to their ranks. The same month, they put out their debut 45 but the punters just didn't seem interested in them. Both their 45s were decidedly weird and may well appeal to fans of freakbeat or psychedelia. Dyble only hung around for a month before moving on to Trader Horne, although, with her departure in July, Pete Sinfield became their lyricist. Over 25 years on, this and their second effort have become minor collectables, as has their album, which sold only in very small quantities at the time. It was actually quite a good amalgam of sunshine pop compositions like North Meadow and more offbeat tracks which owed more to Syd Barrett.

The Ballroom - Preparing for Millenium
At long last Curt Boettcher has started to achieve deserved recognition. His Millennium and Sagittarius exploits are reasonably documented and have seen reissues over the last decade. But his earlier projects and one-offs as creator, arranger and producer have remained legend only amongst a handful of specialist collectors. Now thankfully, Rev-Ola has started a series that should see his star shine again. The Ballroom CD kicks off with twenty-two tracks that document his post-Goldebriars period, centered around Ballroom and Summers Children, and includes demos that were to mature with Millennium and Sagittarius. It's a treasure trove for lovers of creative dream-pop and the soft underbelly of psychedelia.

The Parliaments - Testify
The Parliaments were an early doo-wop singing group from Plainfield, New Jersey. They were a quintet formed in the back room of a barbershop comprised of:
* George Clinton
* Stingray Davis
* Fuzzy Haskins
* Calvin Simon
* Grady Thomas
The group was based on Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, but quickly created a unique sound, including, most notably, very bizarre lyrics. While Clinton, the leader of the group, made weekly trips to Detroit to produce for such groups as The Pets and Roy Handy, the Parliaments switched labels repeatedly, releasing several EPs, including Poor Willy/Party Boys (APT), Lonely Island/Cry For Flip (Golden World) and Heart Trouble/That Was My Girl (Golden World) without success. In 1967, the Parliaments released I Wanna Testify for Revilot, and song went to #3 R&B and #20 Pop on the Billboard Music Charts. This was followed by a dispute with Revilot in 1968, and Clinton's renaming of the group as Funkadelic (which was more in keeping with the musical direction of the group, funk, and integrated the popular genre of psychedelic music), composed of the backing band for the Parliaments, including Billy Bass Nelson. When Revilot declared bankruptcy, the Parliaments were sold to Atlantic Records, and Clinton abandoned doo-wop to avoid working for Atlantic. Funkadelic, and its soon created sister group, Parliament, soon became the legendary creators of funk.

Nirvana - The Story of Simon Simopath + All of Us
In view of the commercial appeal of much of this multi-instrumental duo's music, it is surprising they did not achieve greater recognition. Campbell-Lyons, who came from Ealing, had previously been in pre-July band Second Thoughts.
Their debut album, “The Story Of Simon Simopath“, a science-fiction pantomime, was an early attempt at a rock concept album. It contained some finely constructed pop songs, including the harmonious “Pentecost Hotel“ (later issued as a single), “We Can Help You“ (issued as a single by the Alan Bown Set), the catchy “Satellite Jockey“,“Wings Of Love“, which was later issued as their sixth single and a couple of more mellow songs: “Lonely Boy“ and “Never Found A Love Like This Before“.
The follow-up, “All Of Us“, was an even more poignant collection of often dreamy pop songs. Two tracks, the sad but beautiful “Tiny Goddess“, which was issued as the group's first single, and “Rainbow Chaser“, one of the early examples of phasing which actually climbed to No. 34 in the Spring of 1968, were outstanding. This song was later included on “You Can All Join In“, Island's 1969 sampler. Also of note were the heavily orchestrated “Melanie Blue“,“All Of Us“, and “Girl In The Park“.
