Flamin Groovies - Super Sneakers
What made the Groovies such a formidable band was the double dynamite supplied by guitarist Cyril Jordan and singer/wildman Roy A. Loney. Together they formed an uneasy partnership that guided the band through its most fertile period, from 1968-1971. In 1968, for next to nothing, the band recorded a seven-song EP entitled Sneakers. This little bit of DIY ingenuity resulted in a contract with Epic and the huge sum of 80,000 dollars (1968 dollars, mind you) to be spent on their debut recording, Supersnazz. It was a great album that didn't sell, but did get them dropped from Epic. Quickly signing with Kama Sutra, the Groovies closed the '60s and started the '70s with two terrific records (Flamingo and Teenage Head), but public apathy and the increasingly tempestuous relationship between Jordan and Loney led to the latter's departure for a solo career in 1971. Jordan, now free to run the band as a "benevolent" dictator and indulge his passion for a more folk-rock (read: Byrds) focus, hired guitarist/vocalist Chris Wilson, curiously added the apostrophe to their first name, and in 1972 moved the band to England.

The Yardbirds - Having A Rave Up + Over Under Sideways Down
In addition to their six Top 40 songs, the Yardbirds will be remembered as having produced the top three English blues-based guitarists of the ‘60s: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.
Clapton was on board when the group recorded their early bluesy English hits, but he left after recording their first U.S. hit, "For Your Love" (No. 6, 1965), to eventually join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.
Replacement Beck was the lead guitarist for "Heart Full of Soul" (No. 9, 1965), "I'm a Man" (No. 17, 1965), "Shapes of Things" (No. 11, 1966) and "Over Under Sideways Down" (No. 13, 1966). Original bassist Paul Samwell-Smith quit in summer 1966, and guitarist Chris Dreja switched to bass, leaving room for Page, who was present for the recording of the group's last hit, "Happenings 10 Years Time Ago" (No. 30, 1966).
Beck was fired in 1966 for missing shows because of illness. In 1968 drummer Jim McCarty and singer and harmonica player Keith Relf left the band. Page formed the New Yardbirds; that group eventually mutated into Led Zeppelin.

Sagittarius - Present Tense
Curt Boettcher had been a veteran of pop music before he had put together Sagittarius; he had been a member of the folk band The Goldebriars, who had released two albums on Epic Records in the early 60s. The limitations of the genre only allowed a sliver of the innovation Boettcher would subsequently display to shine through with the Goldebriars, but when he began work with the band Ballroom a few years later, those present were able to witness his greatness as both a producer and songwriter. His arrangements and chord structures were tantalizingly unique and way ahead of their time, and his angelic, choirboy voice was not unlike that of Peter Pan not quite grown up. During the recording of the Ballroom album (never released), Boettcher formed an alliance with Gary Usher, who was producing the Byrds Younger Than Yesterday album in a neighboring studio. Usher recognized the greatness extant in Boettcher, and with Usher at the producer's helm, the two went to work on Present Tense.
The album is a combination of some original Ballroom tracks, some re-recorded Ballroom tracks, newly written tunes, and a couple of covers. Although Sagittarius was designed to in effect be a pseudonym for a Boettcher solo album (it was his astrological sign), during the making of Present Tense he formed The Millennium, which was a band containing Boettcher and several session musicians including Keith Olsen (who would go on to produce several multi-platinum albums), Lee Mallory (for whom Boettcher had previously produced some sides), Joey Stec, Sandy Salisbury, and Michael Fennelly (who would later form Crabby Appleton, whose wonderful single "Go Back" reached the Top 40 in the summer of 1970), Doug Rhodes, and Ron Edgar. These guys were utilized as vocalists and instrumentalists on Present Tense, and their presence helped flesh out the work into a stunning collage of bright, wonderful sounds.

Bo Diddley - The Chess Box
He only had a few hits in the 1950s and early '60s, but as Bo Diddley sang, "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover." You can't judge an artist by his chart success, either, and Diddley produced greater and more influential music than all but a handful of the best early rockers. The Bo Diddley beat -- bomp, ba-bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp -- is one of rock & roll's bedrock rhythms, showing up in the work of Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, and even pop-garage knock-offs like the Strangeloves' 1965 hit "I Want Candy." Diddley's hypnotic rhythmic attack and declamatory, boasting vocals stretched back as far as Africa for their roots, and looked as far into the future as rap. His trademark otherworldly vibrating, fuzzy guitar style did much to expand the instrument's power and range.
As a live performer, Diddley was galvanizing, using his trademark square guitars and distorted amplification to produce new sounds that anticipated the innovations of '60s guitarists like Jimi Hendrix. In Great Britain, he was revered as a giant on the order of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. The Rolling Stones in particular borrowed a lot from Bo's rhythms and attitude in their early days, although they only officially covered a couple of his tunes, "Mona" and "I'm Alright." Other British R&B groups like the Yardbirds, Animals, and Pretty Things also covered Diddley standards in their early days. Buddy Holly covered "Bo Diddley" and used a modified Bo Diddley beat on "Not Fade Away"; when the Stones gave the song the full-on Bo treatment (complete with Phil Spector shaking maracas cause they played it too fast), the result was their first big British hit.

Sapphire Thinkers - From Within 1969 (Hobbit 503)
Surprisingly good CA-sounding melodic/harmony psych trip, instantly likable and strong enough to hold your attention for repeat plays. Elements from disparate sources are brought in -- Curt Boettcher sunshine pop, Bay Area teen top 40 psych like Neighb'rhood Childr'n, Sunset Strip organ/fuzz/flute a la Strawberry Alarmclock -- yet the end result is consistent and convincing, with plenty of strength in the songwriting and arrangements, and no major weaknesses. A few tracks point towards the relaxed early 1970s psych sound of Kak and Bob Smith. Impressive, not unlike a junior Music Emporium. Ex-Merry Prankster Sandy "Dismount" Lehmann-Haupt was involved and may have contributed to the non-fake vibe of this LP.

Fever Tree - Fever Tree
Fever Tree were an American rock group of the 1960s chiefly known for their anthemic 1968 hit San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native).
The band hailed from Houston, Texas and started in 1966 as folk rock outfit The Bostwick Vines, but changed their name to Fever Tree a year later after the addition of keyboard player Rob Landes. They subsequently moved to San Francisco and got sucked up by the flower power music scene there.
Their fifteen minutes of fame arrived when their anthemic song San Francisco Girls reached #91 in the U.S. charts, somewhen late 1968. Like most of the band's material, it was written by the couple of Scott and Vivian Holtzman who also were their producers. This 4-minute track captured all the band's trademarks: Dennis Keller's incantation-like vocals, the quick shifting between slow parts with an almost sacral feeling and faster, more rock-oriented parts and especially the searing guitar work by Michael Knust.
Fever Tree also released their self-titled debut album in 1968, which charted at #156. A second album, Another Time Another Place followed in 1969. Apart from San Francisco Girls, they never had another hit, although they later also tried writing songs themselves when they had dropped the Holtzmans as producers. The band finally called it a day in 1970 but reformed in 1978 with only guitarist Michael Knust remaining from the original line-up. This new formation made no impact whatsoever, and Fever Tree was not heard of again until 2003 when Michael Knust passed away from an accidental drug overdose.

* Imitation Situation 1 (Toccata and Fugue) (Holtzman / Holtzman / Landes / Bach)

The Downliners Sect - The Definitive Downliners Sect Singles As and Bs
Formed in 1963 from the remnants of a Twickenham group called The Downliners. The Sect were the resident band at Eel Pie Island for part of 1964 and were signed to Columbia that summer. Despite a healthy number of singles, three albums and a ep they never managed the transition from the clubs to the charts. Part of their problems may have been their lack of original material and their image both musically, and in their physical appearance. A band which has existed as long as the Downliners Sect, a band which has been so faithful to their musical roots, a band which has never compromised or sold out to musical trends and still after all these years have the energy and feeling for their music-a band like that deserves both success and respect.

This 70's Italian band (vocals in English) employs some unique ideas in their sound, as well as some progressive tendencies, including rapid shifts from soft acoustics to hard rocking electrified guitar jams, etc. Some folk influences are also apparent in the sound, as well as typical late sixties psychedelic folk-rock type harmonies led by lead vocalist Sylviana Aliotta.
A classic Italian psych band. Both albums are similar, though An Escape From a Box sounds a little more mature. Psych fans should be sure to give them a listen.

Rolling Stones - Touring Party 1972
The fabled summer 1972 tour through the U.S. and Canada is revered by Stones fans worldwide as arguably the band's greatest ever, and it remains enshrined in the annals of rock lore and popular imagination as the masterpiece speedball of indoor triumph, outdoor maelstrom, and backstage debauch. It is well known that, after the tour starters in Vancouver and Seattle, a typical Stones set comprised these 15 songs in this sequence: Brown Sugar, Bitch, Rocks Off, Gimme Shelter, Happy, Tumbling Dice, Love In Vain, Sweet Virginia, You Can't Always Get What You Want, All Down The Line, Midnight Rambler, Bye Bye Johnny, Rip This Joint, Jumping Jack Flash, Street Fighting Man.
Notably absent was anything from before 1968 in the Stones' catalog (excepting in the occasional encore medley). This tour also marked the banishment of their dark epic "Sympathy for the Devil", which had been (fairly or not) associated with the killing at Altamont, from Stones American performances for much of the 1970s.
On a very few occasions, the band would add a different song (or two), but these 15 formed a predictable core. Jagger himself admitted such near the end of the tour, lamenting, "It was kind of disappointing to find we couldn't vary the show more. When we try to stick in a few extra numbers, the whole show kind of tilts out of balance. We kept to the sequence that felt best for the show."

The Seagull CD claims "Recorded Live September 1979", but see below.
Notes: The most likely date for this recording is that cited in Howard Dewitt's The Mystic's Music, which states that it was recorded live at the Roxy Theatre, Los Angeles, on November 26, 1978, as stated on the Celtic Soul CD.
KWEST-FM in Los Angeles did broadcast the entire performance, and CSP is pleased to offer this to collectors and fans. Enjoy what we consider to be the definitive "Wavelength" tour recording - featuring a terrific version of "Sweet Thing", a scorching "Help Me", an uptempo "Purple Heather", and of course, "Wavelength" - now never performed.
