Van Morrison - Tell Me Something
Although technically it's not a Van Morrison album, fans of the Belfast Cowboy will undoubtedly flock to a CD called Tell Me Something: the Songs of Mose Allison with Van Morrison, Georgie Fame, Ben Sidran and Mose Allison. As the title implies, the new album is a tribute to Allison, a songwriter/performer who defies categorization. The four highlighted artists - including Allison himself on two tracks - mix and match their talents, trading off lead vocal duties on the 13 Allison originals. The final product could be filed comfortably under jazz, blues or popIt's not just another Van Morrison album but Morrison is, largely, the star of the show, and anyone who knows his work will realize that he was the impetus behind the project.
Then again, Morrison sings on only seven of the disc's 13 tracks; Sidran and Fame divide lead-vocal duties on the remaining eight. All three team up for vocals on one track, "Benediction," and Allison himself joins Morrison on two tracks near the end of the album. So it very much has the feel of a group effort, with musicians coming and going, watching the others work when they're not playing themselves.

Jungle Exotica - Strip Records
32 song German compilation of 50's "stranded in the jungle" type themed songs, with a feel like classic songs such as 'Tequila' or 'Night Train', frequently with saxophone dressing or a reverbed guitar. This is the same label that put out the Las Vegas Grind (Parts 1, 2, & 3) compilations. As the disclaimer states, "Note: This is primitive, raw Rn'R! As the mastertapes have vanished, these CD's are re-mastered from the cleanest available copies. Some surface noise does turn up- but, baby, that is R&R". Some really neat songs within. Energy is in overdrive, and fun is saturated in the track.Trip to the Jungle, Bongos galore, Oriental chants, Jungle madness....
In which the debauched bump'n'grind sounds of Las Vegas Grind venture into the Exotics of the jungle, the arabian deserts, and the Far East!

Lindisfarne - Fog On The Tyne
The group began its life as the Downtown Faction, but soon changed their name to Brethren. In 1968, after hearing of an American group of the same name, they were rechristened Lindisfarne after the island of the same name off the Northumbrian coast. In 1970 Tony Stratton-Smith signed them to Charisma Records and their debut album Nicely Out of Tune was released, defining their mixture of bright harmony and rollicking folk rock.
Their second album, the Bob Johnston-produced Fog on the Tyne, was released in 1971 and began their commercial success, charting late in 1971 and reaching No. 1 the following year. Their profile was also raised when Jackson played mandolin on Rod Stewart's breakthrough hit single "Maggie May" (even though Stewart only credited him on the sleeve of the parent album 'Every Picture Tells a Story' as 'The mandolin player in Lindisfarne...the name slips my memory' and John Peel's appearance with Stewart on 'Top Of The Pops' miming on the instrument made everyone think it was him on the record as well).

Pink Floyd - Cruel But Fair
An excellent recording of a complete 1975 gig. The legend says it was taped by the legendary taper Mike Millard, containing the best-existing versions of Dick Parry performing a saxophone solo in "Echoes" and the prototype "Raving and Drooling" and "You've Gotta Be Crazy", which would eventually become "Sheep" and "Dogs" respectively. After You Gotta Be Crazy, Dave Gilmour says "It was a cruel song.... But fair. The next tune we're going to do for you is another new number, it's called 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'. It has something to do with Syd Barrett who some of you might remember..... & some of you probably won't."

Flat Earth Society - Waleeco
From Lynn, just North of Boston, Flat Earth Society were notable for their crispy, clear vocal sound. In early 1968 they were approached by the Boston advertising firm Quinn and Johnson to make an album and a jingle for the manufacturer of the 'Waleeco' candy bar - the F. B. Washburn Candy Company. That year every 'Waleeco' bar carried a coupon advertising the Flat Earth's Society's album Waleeco for $1.50 and six 'Waleeco' bar wrappers.Recorded at Fleetwood Recording Studio in Revere, most of the material was written by Kerivan, the only non-original being a slow melodic version of Midnight Hour. The album covers quite a wide rock spectrum with goodtime (I'm So Happy), folk (When You're There and The Prelude For Town Monk), hard rock (Four & Twenty Miles and Shadows), as well as psychedelia, but each track has the band's own style about it. Aside from Feelin' Much Better, the best tracks are arguably on the second side of the album. Dark Street Downtown has some haunting vocals superimposed upon swirling piano. Portrait In Grey is a haunting piano-oriented instrumental and Satori, a very strange psychedelic instrumental.
The band made a few appearances after making the album but broke up soon after.

Magical Power Mako - Super Record
The second (and all-time best) Mako album, originally issued by Japanese Polydor in 1975; there have been a couple Japanese CD reissues of this in the past, which are no longer available. One of the key documents of Japanese underground psychedelic music, presented in truly sublime fashion. Although MPM went on to record 20+ more records after this one, he would never exceed the spatial exuberance of Super Record. From the liner notes: "Mako's music possesses a certain strange kind of texture. It's certainly is what they call rock, but contains elements that we can't describe so succinctly. It clearly goes beyond the various genres of music, and while full of them all, it sends forth a fierce glow. This 'Super Record' shows Mako looking down upon the earth from above, wandering through Alaska and Siberia, the Near East, Okinawa, and South America. Adding to the variety of folk music of India, Turkey, and Russia, his mandolin or Taisho koto, and especially his marvelously performed guitar, expressing fully the odor of the soil and mankind's universality."Magical Power Mako - Super Record

Tripsichord Music Box - Tripsichord Music Box
Tripsichord Music Box (name shortened to 'Tripsichord' in 1970) were one of the Bay Area's most enigmatic and amazing bands. Despite being one of the least documented and least commercially successful of the San Francisco Sound family of groups under producer Matthew Katz' control, the music they left behind is quite stellar and easily ranks alongside the output of stablemates Moby Grape and It's A Beautiful Day from the same period (1968-70).Tripsichord Music Box started life as The Ban before changing names to Now. The group was managed by Randy Guzman's parents, so he took the name Gordon, for business reasons. The Guzman's had shopped the group around to all of the L.A. record companies and local promoters, while the band played high-profile gigs at places like the Sea Witch and Pandora's Box on the Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Despite playing the same circuit as the Seeds, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Yellow Payges et al, and building a considerable following, it was not until they came to the attention of Matthew Katz that they were taken seriously as a viable commercial entity. Katz relocated the band to San Francisco and re-christened them Tripsichord Music Box. They played live (along with most of Katz' other bands) frequently at his San Francisco Sound Ballroom in Seattle, and in California.
In December 1967, Tripsichord Music Box was the first group to record on 8-track equipment in San Francisco (prior to the arrival of state of the art multi-tracking equipment, most S.F. bands were going to Los Angeles to record).

The Spike Drivers - The Spike Drivers
Four groovy guys and a gal made up this outfit who hailed from Detroit (*), Michigan. Their material is in the soft psychedelic folk-rock mould - very hip, very San Francisco and they were produced by the Koppelman-Rubin team on Break Out The Wine and Jerry Ragovoy on the other Reprise tracks. The band were also featured prominently on WDTM-FM's folk/eclectic show, "Promenade", hosted by Larry Miller, who is to be given some credence as one of the founders of sixties FM format (Miller created the San Francisco KMPX all night show in Feb '67, as an "electrified extension" of thematic "Promenade").
The Spike Drivers were semi-regulars at the Chessmate Coffee House in Detroit, a mostly folk venue that also hosted bands like Southbound Freeway, Siegel-Schwall Blues Band and Blues Magoos). They also got to open for The Animals in New York's Central Park in 1966.

Christopher - Christopher
This Texas outfit's psychedelic/progressive album has been increasingly attracting attention from collectors in recent years and has also had a limited repressing on vinyl and CD, including an official reissue by Gear Fab. It combines some fine fuzzy psychedelic guitar work on tracks like Dark Road, In Your Time, Disaster and The Wind, whilst Magic Cycles leans towards the progressive genre. Well worth tracking down.Formed in 1968 in Houston, Texas and known as United Gas. When they landed a contract with Metromedia, a name change was suggested to avoid confusion with Pacific Gas and Electric, although the band continued to perform as United Gas. The new name was inspired by St. Christopher and Avitts and Walden's material took on a spiritual flavour.
During the recording of the album, Doug Tull was having severe problems with drugs. He attempted suicide, was fired, and the LP was completed using session musicians. Tull then formed Josefus; he would eventually commit suicide.

Ashra - The Making Of
This generous length triple CD set is a collection of tracks culled from rehearsal sessions in 1978 by Manuel Gottsching, Lutz Ulbrich and Harald Grosskopf in preparation for the 'Correlations' album. With this in mind I was to put it mildly highly surprised by the opening (forty six minute) track 'Paradise Express' which was a crazed mesh of pounding drums, guitar and electronics much more in the style of Ash Ra Tempel from five to six years earlier or even Cosmic Jokers. The drumming was so intense Harald's arms must have been ready to fall off at the end of such a marathon. So its very powerful and if you are into that sort of thing extremely exciting and above all manic but nothing remotely like what appeared on 'Correlations'. For some of you that will be a good thing, for others not so good. 'After the Flood' and 'Steamer' are a little more restrained but still very much 'Tempel' rather than the slicker more 'electronic' Ashra sound of that period.

The Allman Brothers Band - Fillmore East 2/70
Not to be confused with At Fillmore East (1971) this is a document of the February 1970 Fillmore shows when the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band joined forces for three nights of epic performances at the Fillmore East in New York City. Portions of the Grateful Dead's February 13th and 14th performances have already been released as Bear's Choice and Dick's Picks Volume Four. Aptly titled Fillmore East, February 1970, the disc opens with a scorching rendition of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed that simply grooves. Dickey Betts and Duane Allman are magnificent, as they play with reckless abandon, yet tightly in synch. The highlight of this album, however, is the nearly 31-minute Mountain Jam that drips with an colorfully electrified intensity. indeed, the Allman Brothers Band takes the Donovan-penned song and mutates it into its own magical panorama of sound. The dual guitars of Betts and Allman dodge and weave through Berry Oakley's bass line, leading the ensemble to the outer reaches of the tune and beyond as its traverses through a Miles Davis-style jam á la Bitches Brew.

Synanthesia - Synanthesia
A highly eclectic album by a folky Scottish trio, this effort ostensibly draws upon sources from Greek and Roman mythology and history, as titles like Minerva, Morpheus, Vesta, and Mnemoysne readily testify. The music is very gentle, with a most unusual blend of instruments including vibraphone and flute as well as guitars, oboe and mandolin.Synanthesia - Synanthesia (RCA Victor SF 8058) 1969
