Oysterband - Alive And Acoustic
Oysterband (or the Oyster Band, as it used to be) are one of the few outfits still burning with the fire of punk, but managing to combine it with the ideals and knowledge of English folk music -- a balancing act they've made into a fine art over the years. The Oysterband began life as The Whitstable Oyster Co. Ceilidh Band in 1975; it was a damn fine dance band. The core of the membership as well as the sound have remained largely constant over the years -- despite the belief of some band members that the early material was not good. The core group of the band throughout the last twenty-five years has been John Jones (melodeon, lead vocals), Alan Prosser (acoustic and electric guitars, fiddle, and vocals) and Ian Telfer (fiddle, viola, English concertina, and vocals). What you get with these lads is a near perfect mix of vocals and instruments.Oysterband - Alive And Acoustic

Afterglow - Afterglow
From Chico, California, this band were originally known as The Medallions. Their album, which was produced by Larry Goldberg and Leo Kulka (aka Leo De Gar Kulka, a regular at Golden Gate studios, in San Francisco), consists of soft pop with a tinny organ backing and memorable tunes. Some of the tracks such as Susie's Gone, It's A Wonder, and Afternoon are extremely psychedelic.Afterglow - Afterglow (MTA 5010) 1968

Freakbeat Magazine Presents - Fun With Mushrooms
What we have here is some of the very best of current psychedelic music, music that goes beyond any fashion conscious trend, music that exists outside of any MTV Corporate Hype, and just like the mushrooms that inspired it, has a tendancy to sprout up all over the globe as a celebration of life... shouting out "Freedom", "Justice" &"Liberty"... there for all those who want to explore... the ultimate taster of musical fungi sprouting through the crap & mundane. So eat, drink & be merry, and remember - as a famous freak once said "To be a mushroom is to rise above the shit"...Freakbeat Magazine Presents - Fun With Mushrooms (Delerium CD Delec 009 1993)

R. Crumb And His Cheap Suit Serenaders - R. Crumb And His Cheap Suit Serenaders
"R. Crumb and his Cheap Suit Serenaders" (CSS) are a loosely organized string band playing songs from the 1920s and (occasionally) modern songs styled after the songs of the 20s. They recorded three albums in the 70s and occasionally are active today, though usually without Mr. Crumb who lives in France."R. Crumb and his Cheap Suit Serenaders" is the first album by the CSS. It features R. Crumb, Allan Dodge, and Robert E. Armstrong. The three remained the core of the CSS over the next two albums, CSS#2 and CSS#3 despite many changes in personnel. This album does not appear to be available on CD.
The record contains up-tempo string band music, mostly songs from the early part of the 20th century. It's fun, light hearted and has surprisingly little sarcasm considering the tone of the nominal leader's better known art form!
The cover has a background of a typical "Crumb" scene of an old city, with the title drawn against a starry sky. A sepia-toned photo of the band is in the foreground, labeled "The Cheap Suit Serenaders givin' 'em what they want at a recent New Year's party." In the picture, Crumb is playing a four-string banjo, Dodge a mandolin, and Armstrong a "Universal" accordion (the brand name of the accordion is barely visible).

Brewer and Shipley - Weeds and Tarkio
Brewer and Shipley were a folk rock duo comprised of Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley. Their intricate guitar work, stunning harmonies and songwriting made them the best of many Simon & Garfunkel followers during the 1970s. Their biggest hit was "One Toke Over the Line" from their most commercially successful release, "Tarkio." However, they experienced the success of two other singles on the Billboard charts. Some of the best musicians of the San Francisco scene play on these albums, including: Richard Greene (Seatrain), Mark Naftalin (Butterfield Blues Band, Mother Earth, Quicksilver), Michael Bloomfield, Bob Jones (We Five, Southern Comfort), Jerry Garcia, John Cipollina, David La Flamme (It's A Beautiful Day), Spencer Dryden (Jefferson Airplane),...Not surprisingly, all their albums offer some good guitar solos.

John Kay & The Sparrows - Collector's Item
Before joining Steppenwolf, German emigre John Kay led Sparrow, a Yorkville Village based act. They had been home to Jack London and were his backing band on several of his Canadian hits. In 1965 they recorded an album with London on Columbia Records before leaving him to pursue their own, only official single "Hard Time With The Law". With John Kay's growing popularity in Yorkville, it was only a matter of time before he connected with the band in May of 1966. They would record several singles and one album as John Kay And Sparrow helping solidify their popularity as a touring act in the US. Less than a year later Sparrow broke up and John Kay, Dennis Edmonton (now known as Mars Bonfire), Jerry Edmonton, Goldy McJohn and Nick St. Nicholas re-emerged as Steppenwolf.John Kay & The Sparrows - Collector's Item

The Litter - $100 Fine
This one goes for $45 on Amazon, so it can't be that bad, guys...From Minneapolis, the Litter were one of the finest bands to emerge from the Midwest garage scene. Their debut lp, "Distortions," is considered a classic of the garage/psychedelic movement, with their gloriously fuzzed drenched takes of classics by the Who, Spencer Davis, the Small Faces, and Yardbirds, to name a few. The results gained the Litter exposure, and gave them the confidence to go back to the studio to work on their sophomore effort.
The results of their work is the amazing "$100 Fine," released in 1968. The first major difference between this and the debut lp is that the band wrote most of their own material for this lp, (save covers of the Yardbirds' "Tallyman," Small Faces "Here I Go Again," Procol Harum's "Kaleidoscope," and the Zombies "She's Not There") showcasing their talents as writers as well as musicians.

Steeleye Span - Parcel of Rogues + Rocket Cottage
The name Steeleye Span comes from a character in the traditional song "Horkstow Grange" (which they did not actually record until they released an album by that name in 1998). The song gives an account of a fight between John "Steeleye" Span and John Bowlin, neither of whom are proven to have been real people.
Throughout their long history, Steeleye Span has seen a great many personnel changes but has maintained a strong continuity of tradition. Lead vocalist Prior was one of the main attractions of the band's music, being one of a handful of strong-but-melodically-voiced women in rock music in the 1970s (along with Sandy Denny, Renaissance's Annie Haslam, Jacqui McShee, and Linda Thompson).
Their typical album is a collection of mostly traditional songs with one or two instrumental tracks of jigs and/or reels added in; the traditional songs often include some of the Child ballads. In their later albums there has been an increased tendency to include music written by the band members, but they have never gotten completely away from the traditional music, which draws upon both the English and the Celtic traditions.

Princess Nicotine - Folk and Pop Music of Myanmar
Well, thanks to the existence of Sublime Frequencies now you can get it! Princess Nicotine is a compilation of 45s and tapes purchased and traded in Burma by Alan Bishop.
From the evidence presented on this release we know that the music of Burma is extremely varied, and by way of orientation, on this compilation one can hear vague musical relations to all the neighboring musical traditions: some Indonesian/Javanese/Balinese Gamelan style rhythmic concepts, a few elements of Indian pop and film music, the clashing of cymbals and punctuations of Chinese festival and opera music ... it's all there ... sort of.

The Blues Magoos - Psychedelic Lollipop
This group came from New York's Bronx area, were originally known as Bloos Magoos and gigged regularly around Greenwich Village before Mercury offered them a recording contract in 1966. Their title is misleading, for they specialised in quasi-psychedelic electrical music rather than the blues.Their best moments are on their early albums and (We Ain't Got) Nothing Yet from their first album was a U.S. No. 5 in 1966. It also contained a fine version of J. D. Loudermilk's Tobacco Road.

Syndicate Of Sound - Little Girl
This garage rock quintet formed in San Jose in 1965 and are best known for their Top Ten hit Little Girl. By 1968 they were aiming at underground audiences and, although they achieved no further commercial success, they remained a popular live attraction. Their album (Little Girl) made No. 148 in the U.S. Album Charts and has become quite collectable. In April 1965, just off a short tour headlining the Pacific Northwest with Paul Revere and The Raiders, they descended upon the San Mateo County Fairgrounds for The Teenage Fair (in April of 1965) and won the top prize at the Battle of the Bands competition - studio time at Del-Fi studios and a contract to release one Del-Fi single. The label passed on the option to release the single; instead they pressed up fifteen hundred promo copies of the single and gave them to the band, who took them back home to San Jose to sell at their shows. The 'A' side is an Animals cop, while the 'B' side is a lightweight, almost Beach Boys-like pop tune written by Sharkey. After the band had a minor hit on the Billboard charts with Little Girl Del-Fi reconsidered and decided to officially issue the earlier single, this time on the Scarlet label. However this was pulled quickly after objections from the band's recording manager (and Hush label-owner) Garrie Thompson.
