The Pentangle - Cruel Sister

Though overshadowed by "Sweet Child" and "Basket Of Light", the dreamy, melodic beauty of "Cruel Sister" stands as the high point of Pentangle's exploration of the fusion of folk with jazz and rock elements.
Adding electric guitar for the first time to the already ethereal atmospheres of "Basket Of Light", though many fans did not appreciate it, makes Pentangle's sound much deeper. This was clear from the way in which the voices and instruments interweave on the epic "Jack Orion", which actually never gets boring owing to the fact that the sections do not repeat: they vary with guitars, voices, recorders many times. The title tune was almost as dreamy as Laura Nyro's "Brown Earth", even if built from a quite different story.
On the other side, McShee's amazing voice was never better seen than on "When I Was In My Prime", which despite being a capella, still is recognisable as Pentangle. It is most refreshing to see McShee allowed so much space especially with the sharp remastered sound, and on "A Maid That's Deep In Love", she sang perhaps even better: reflective yet never despairing, romantic yet never sentimental. "Lord Franklin" was even more subtle than the other songs, yet the electric guitar's melody ought to surprise those used to the more folksy "Sweet Child". Indeed, the remastered sound allows one to see how they both complement and supplement each other in a remarkable manner.
On the whole, an atmospheric masterpiece matching almost anything in its era, rivalling Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" and "Moondance" and Tim Buckley's "Lorca" and "Happy Sad".

The Blues Project - Live At The Cafe Au Go Go

This white blues-band simply burst onto the New York music scene between 1965 and 1966. Founder Danny Kalb had contributed two acoustic guitar tracks to a 1964 Elektra blues/folk compilation album The Blues Project. After hearing Tim Hardin playing electric guitar in Greenwich Village soon after he decided to form his own band to play a similar combination of jazz, blues, R&B, and rock.
They were originally going to record for Columbia and recorded a couple of tracks (Violets Of Dawn and Back Door Man) in September/October which were later released as their first single for Verve records. The session man on piano was Al Kooper who was offered a permanent gig with the band. In his early days, Al Kooper had been a Tin Pan Alley/Brill Building production writer (This Diamond Ring, Who Wears Short Shorts, etc.) and was with Bob Dylan on Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde, playing the organ in a way that would influence many American and English groups. Kooper kept on doing sessions with New York based singers during his stay with the group.
In October 1965 the band were offered a residency at the Cafe A Go Go in Greenwich Village where they began to get a huge following. Here, their first 'live' album was recorded and highly acclaimed. The band were one of the city's main live attractions playing three concerts in Central Park in the same year. In January 1966 Flanders left after an argument and signed with Verve as a solo artist. The vocals were now to be shared, with Danny doing the blues numbers, Steve the folk, and Al the R&B and rock tunes. The Live At The Cafe Au Go Go album was released soon after with most of the material recorded after Flanders' departure. It sold over 20,000 copies in its first month of release.

The Birds - The Collectors' Guide To Rare British Birds

Although this West Drayton band, originally known as the Thunderbirds, set out playing R'n'B and Motown-influenced music some of their later records will be of interest to collectors of psychedelia. All of their 45s are now rare and sought-after, especially the Reaction one.
The Bird's three 45s feature frantic guitar work and together with McKenzie's powerful vocals, confirm them as one of the most talented UK mid-sixties bands. In 1966 they changed their name to Birds Birds to record the now mega-rare Say Those Magic Words 45, which also features additional guitar work on the flip from Jeff Beck.
The band attracted public attention as a result of a legal battle with America's Byrds over the rights to the name and also appeared in a horror movie, 'The Deadly Bees' singing That's All I Need You For. When they split in 1966 Gardner and Wood joined Creation. Later Gardner achieved some success with Ashton, Gardner and Dyke. Wood, of course, achieved fame with The Jeff Beck Group, The Faces and The Rolling Stones.

The Pentangle - Sweet Child

Pentangle was formed in 1967 by John Renbourn and Bert Jansch two guitarists who had both already recorded as solo artists since 1965. Both musicians had recorded together ‘Bert and John’ in 1966 for ‘Transatlantic’. Jacqui Mc Shee who joined the band on vocals had already worked with John Renbourn on his first solo record. The rhythm section was formed by Danny Thompson on double bass and Terry Cox on drums and percussion, both former sidemen of Alexis Korner in his band Alexis Korner Blues Incorporated.
Pentangle played a mixture of Jazz and Folk with Blues-elements, influences that the band integrated in their debut record ‘The Pentangle’ which was produced by Shel Talmy. The same year Pentangle released their second record ‘Sweet child’ a double LP consisting of live and studio tracks and containing among others two compositions by Charlie Mingus ’Haitian Fight Song’ and ‘Goodbye Pork Pie hat’.This is the limited Japanese reissue, originally released in 1968, of the British folk-rock act's sprawling two CD set, half recorded in the studio & half live at the Royal Festival Hall, packaged in a miniature LP sleeve it features 33 tracks including four bonus tracks, 'In Time' (alt. version), 'The Trees They Do Grow High' (alt. version), 'Hole In The Coal' (alt. version), & 'Haitian Fight Song' (studio version).

The Strangeloves - I Want Candy

From Brooklyn, New York. As recording artists they are best known for their pulsating versions of I Want Candy (which had been a hit for Brian Poole and The Tremeloes in the UK) and Night Time. Both are fine rockers.
The Strangeloves also recorded under the name The Merry Dragons and Sheep. Under the latter moniker they also enjoyed a No. 58 U.S. hit with Hide And Seek in 1966, whilst a later effort I Feel Good made No. 130. They're also rumoured to have recorded a 45 as The Beach-Nuts.
The band also recorded a version of Hang On Sloopy which they produced for one of their big discoveries - The McCoys. Other production credits by the trio included The Angels' My Boyfriend's Back (which had been a No. 1 for this New Jersey-based female pop trio) back in 1963.
Richard Gottehrer later became a partner in Sire Records, which the band helped to form, producing The Go-Go's first two albums and Blondie's debut. Jerry Goldstein's production credits included The Druids Of Stonehenge, Eric Burdon and War and Tim Buckley's Greetings From L.A.. His Far Out Productions company were based in L.A. from 1969.

Dantalian's Chariot - Chariot Rising

When Zoot Money broke up The Big Roll Band, he formed this suitably named psychedelic outfit who performed frequently at London's Middle Earth and UFO clubs. They were certainly a talented outfit. Andy Summers, of course, later played with The Police, and Colin Allen went on to play with John Mayall and Stone The Crows. They recorded just one single for Columbia, The Madman Running Through The Fields. Penned by Money and Andy Summers it was perhaps one of the finest pieces of psychedelia recorded in the UK, this single is now very sought-after.This 1967 effort was British pop-psych at its zenith, strongly reminiscent of (and as good as) the classic early sides by Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd. Dantalian's Chariot's live appearances were amazing. They took to the stage in white robes and had what was generally regarded as the best light show in town. The only problem was this ensured they made heavy financial loses with every appearance.
Rumours of an unreleased Dantalion's Chariot album were untrue, but in 1995 David Wells' Tenth Planet label pieced together an album of previously unreleased material by the band, plus both sides of their 45. Soma, which appeared in two parts, one on each side of the album, with Andy Summers (who co-wrote it with his tutor Narzir Jarazbhoy) on sitar, was a fine Eastern-sounding remnant from 1967. Fourpenny Bus Ride and, to a lesser degree, Four Firemen were reasonable examples of whimsical psychedelic pop, but of the previously unissued material the jarring World War Three and jazz-tinged High Flying Bird (not the popular US West Coast standard, although it is an ode to the beautiful people of San Francisco), both Money/Summers collaborations, are the high points. By contrast Coffee Song and Recapture The Thrill were inconsequential mainstream recordings. However, overall this album is recommended.

Oxford Circle - Live at the Avalon 1966

Oxford Circle was a legendary psychedelic blues band primarily due to the fact that drummer Paul Whaley and vocalist/fuzz guitarist Gary Lee Yoder were members of the cult proto-metal band Blue Cheer. This set "Live at the Avalon 1966" contains 14 live cuts in good sound quality for the time period. In addition it also contains four studio cuts. "Foolish Woman" a garage/psychedelic favorite and "Troubles" another band original appear here in both studio and live versions. These are the strongest group originals on the disk. The live cuts are mostly classic blues or British blues/rock covers. Versions of "You're A Better Man Than I" (Yardbirds) and "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" (Animals)and some songs by Van Morrison illustrate that their main influences were British blues/rock bands of the mid to late sixties with a California psychedelic take. Blues covers "Baby Please Don't Go" and "I'm A Man" are especially energetic. The Yardbirds like rave-up at the end of the latter contains some Jeff Beck inspired guitar work by lead guitarist Dehner Patten with some psychedelic fuzz and distortion added by Yoder. Fans of California's psychedelic scene and rare blues/garage rock will find this to be a hidden treasure.

Claudine Longet - 1967-1972 - [The Very Best of]

Claudine Longet? Didn't she kill somebody? Sadly, Claudine Longet is most remembered for a tragic day in 1976 when a gun she was holding discharged into the stomach of her boyfriend, ski legend Spider Sabich, leaving him mortally wounded in the bathroom of their Aspen, Colorado chalet. Prior to the shooting, the world knew Claudine best as wife of crooner Andy Williams, although she had gained a measure of fame in her own right as a pop singer with a trademark soft, whispery French accent, and also had to her credit some film work and a string of bit parts on television shows like "Combat!" and "The Rat Patrol." Nowadays, though, more people are familiar with the tasteless Saturday Night Live "Claudine Longet Invitational Ski Tournament" skit (sounds of gunshots are dubbed over footage of skiers flying off a ramp) than with her record and film work.

While the world mourned for Spider Sabich, few tears were shed for the acting and singing career of Claudine which ended just as abruptly as Sabich's life that night. And that's a shame, for Claudine left behind a small legacy of film and TV appearances as well as a catalog of under-appreciated albums which embody the same lethal magic for which Spider Sabich paid so dearly.

As the sixties drew nigh, Claudine's trip down Moon River was coming to an end. She and Williams separated in 1970, and by 1972 Claudine was romantically involved with Spider Sabich. Spider was an Olympic skier and twice world ski-racing champion, and was the real-life role model for the character played by Robert Redford in the film "Downhill Racer."

Claudine and Spider swung with the glittery jet set that populated Aspen, Colorado, a place that Newsweek magazine at the time described as home to "rich recluses, hip hedonists, mellow cowboys and cocaine-snorting vegetarians." In 1974, Claudine and her three children by Williams moved into Spider's stone-and-glass A-frame in the gated Starwood subdivision of Aspen, a neighborhood that also housed John Denver, Tina Sinatra, Jack Nicholson and Jill St. John.

It should be noted that during this time Claudine released the two finest albums of her career, "We've Only Just Begun" and "Let's Spend the Night Together." The albums were issued on Barnaby Records, a label which, curiously enough, was (and is) owned by Andy Williams. Why, one wonders, would their business relationship intensify just as their marriage was dissolving? Some have interpreted the move as an attempt on Andy's part to maintain whatever ties he could to his beautiful wife, and as we shall see, Andy's loyalty and devotion to Claudine extended beyond the conventional marriage contract. For her part, Claudine came into her own artistically, free at last from the oppressiveness of being Mrs. Andy Williams. Here, finally, was the real Claudine.
The "Let's Spend the Night Together" LP is particularly gratifying. From the fragile, heart-aching version of "God Only Knows" that opens side one to the erotic reworking of the Jagger/Richards title track at the end of side two, Claudine demonstrates that she has few peers when it comes to summoning the power of seduction in front of a microphone. Claudine's take on Graham Nash's "Sleep Song" is as sexually charged as anything by French chanteuse Jane Birkin, but unlike Birkin, Claudine never had to resort to heavy breathing to get her message across.

In retrospect, though, it is Claudine's version of "Jealous Guy" that returns to haunt the listener. Imagine Claudine delivering the following recitation with both hands grasped tightly around a German Lüger:

I was dreaming of the past
And my heart was beating fast
I began to lose control
I began to lose control

I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just the jealous kind

I was feeling insecure
You might not love me anymore
I was shivering inside
I was shivering inside
March 21 was cold and gray. Claudine had set out for the slopes, but then changed her mind and went to the Center Bar, where she spent the afternoon sipping white wine. Around 4:00 she drove home where Spider, who had been skiing, returned a short while later. As Spider got ready for a shower and stripped down to his blue thermal underwear, Claudine approached him with a .22-caliber imitation Lüger pistol, which she later claimed to have come across just that morning while putting away some sweaters. She was asking him how to use it, how to protect herself and her children when he was away, when all of a sudden her finger slipped on the trigger and bang bang boom boom, a tragic accident. Or was it?

Not everyone bought Claudine's slippery-finger story. Some locals considered Claudine to be an intruder in Aspen, and a spoiled brat to boot. The couple's four-year relationship was said to be rocky, and Claudine's jealous episodes in public had raised eyebrows around town. Claudine and her three children were getting to be too much for Spider, and he had supposedly given them a deadline to find other accommodations. Claudine did have some supporters in Aspen, like John and Annie Denver with whom she stayed the night after the shooting, but public sentiment ran largely against her. Like the sirens of mythology, Claudine was seen as an enchantress who had bewitched and then doomed the hapless Spider.

Claudine on trial revealed, if not the circumstances surrounding the shooting, certainly the duplicity of her nature, and indeed the inherent contradiction and guile of the female animal at its most deadly. With mournful eyes and choking back tears, a pale and trembling Claudine told the jury that "we were probably everything that a man and a woman should be to each other, we loved each other so much. He was my best friend." Claudine saw herself as a victim, guilty only of mishandling a loaded gun. Contrast this with testimony of the glass-hurling and ski-wielding Claudine, lashing out at Spider in public. Innocent and mercenary, sweet yet cunning, the prize and the curse.

A detective who was with Claudine at the hospital that night claimed that her initial story was that she had been joking with Spider, and just before the gun went off had said playfully, "Bang, bang. Boom, boom." At the trial, however, Claudine denied this and said she knew better than to play with a loaded gun, her final words to Spider instead: "You are sure it won't fire?" Another famous disputed quote was by ex-husband Andy, who had rushed to Claudine's side after the accident. He was overheard to have remarked, "She's always been a reckless chick who drives too fast, skis too fast and takes too many risks." Andy on the witness stand spoke of Claudine as gentle and loving mother of their three children.

A diary which had been illegally seized was not admitted into evidence, nor were blood tests rumored to have shown traces of cocaine. The diary ignited a hotbed of speculation outside the courtroom, however. Prosecutor and District Attorney Frank Tucker claimed it could blow the lid off the case, as well as pull the covers down on a long list of Hollywood heavyweights.

After less than four hours of testimony and four hours of deliberation, the jury found Claudine Longet guilty only of criminal negligence. She was sentenced to 30 days in jail and two years probation. Claudine chose not to appeal and served her time in April, 1977 in the Pitkin County jail. True to form, Claudine shortly thereafter became romantically linked with her defense lawyer, Ron Austin. The diary was returned to Claudine, who threw it in the fire.

In the ensuing years, Claudine has kept a low profile. Andy Williams continues to perform nine months out of the year in Branson, Missouri at his Moon River Theater. Williams' publicist, Tennyson Flowers, reveals only that Claudine is happily married and still living in Aspen.

The Common People - Of The People, By The People, For The People From The Common People

Talk about your mystery groups – despite 20 years of celebrity among psych fans and being on one of the most respected record labels in the world, no one seems to know much about the 5-man outfit known as the Common People. I used to think they were an Eastcoast band because that's what they sound like, but they were managed by Lord Tim Hudson of Seeds & Lollipop Shoppe infamy, and the 1969 album was apparently recorded in L A, so maybe they were westcoast after all. In any event, the LP is an interesting experience, far from perfect but with a bunch of strange twists and turns unusual for a major label artefact.

Fleetwood Mac - Live At The BBC

Back in the mid-late 1960s (a time when giants walked the earth), Long John Baldry, The Yardbirds, and especially John Mayall and his Blues Breakers spearheaded the British blues band scene. Guitarists such as Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, and Peter Green (yep, in those days Peter Green was mentioned in the same breath as that illustrious line-up) floated in and out of various of these and other, minor, Brit blues bands. All went to school on early American blues legends such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Dixon, and Robert Johnson.
Here's the short version: Clapton became god, and Green's excessive use of drugs doomed him to a shadowy figure floating in and out of Brit blues history. Although Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac Live at the BBC was recorded between 1967 and 1970, this album sounds as if it were done yesterday!

Freeborne - Peak Impressions

A Boston group whose sole album, recorded at CBS Studios in New York, is excellent - full of the acid imagery which typified the Bosstown sound in 1968. Almost every track is of interest. For example Land Of Diana has a compelling organ intro, Visions Of My Own some fine woodwind instrumentation and Inside People unusual fuzztone vocals and pleasing keyboards.

American Blues - Is Here

One of the better known Dallas bands of this era American Blues were originally known as The Warlocks and also an important stepping stone for Dusty Hill and Frank Beard before they went on to join ZZ Top. Their first album was produced by Scotty McKay and recorded at Robin Hood Brian's studio in Tyler, Texas. Side one is predominantly psychedelic and a 45 from it was issued the following year. Side two was in more of a heavy rock style. It did well enough to attract the interest of EMI subsidiary UNI who signed the band.

Jasper Wrath - Anthology 1969-76

Intriguing psych/prog crossover item should appeal to just about everyone. It has excellent songs, lots of fuzz guitar, soaring harmonies, hooks and loud drums and for the prog fans a few flutes and a long pretentious fantasty epic to close things off. Cool album cover too. “Look To The Sunrise” was a near-hit. It’s not, but it is awfully catchy.

The Millenium - Magic Time

Well, for some bizarre reason, a group of superior musicians and songwriters made one fantastic album, BEGIN, that went absolutely nowhere. It was unlike any other album ever made and might be classified as the first true Rock Opera. Each song flowed into the next as if they were one. This is rather strange since BEGIN is actually a compilation of songs by two separate groups, The Millennium and Ballroom. Both groups were formed by Curt Boettcher of Association and Tommy Roe fame. His genius at vocal arrangement was and still is unsurpassed; proven by his arrangements of the Association's Along Comes Mary and Cherish.
Boettcher was also involved with Gary Usher's "studio group" called Sagittarius. The album that resulted from this kinship, Present Tense, has recently been re-released by Sundazed Music with a foreword by Dawn Eden and for all true fans it is a must buy. It is a wonderful album showcasing the talents of all involved. All members of The Millennium are listed and given credit as they helped with vocals and were used as studio musicians for the project ... thanks to Boettcher who was at the time trying to get The Millennium under contract and keep them in spending money. I only recently bought Present Tense and must say I was a bit surprised by the content. If you expect to hear The Millennium, you won't. What you will hear are the seeds that The Millennium grew from, especially Curt Boettcher. The sound is sweet and lyrical and is a perfect vehicle for his voice, but there are moments when the music turns inward and a deeper level is reached. Now that you are totally confused I just want to say ... Buy It ... you won't be disappointed. Dawn Eden says a re-release of The Millennium album by Sundazed is also out there with new liner notes by her and a couple of additional tracks, but I haven't been able to locate it yet.
With the help of Keith Olsen (Music Machine) and Gary Usher(songwriter, surf music avatar, and Columbia staff producer), Boettcher formed The Millennium. This group consisted of seven musicians and songwriters, including Boettcher. The other six members are: Ron Edgar and Doug Rhodes (Music Machine), Michael Fennelly (who later formed Crabby Appleton), Lee Mallory, Sandy Salisbury (Ballroom), and Joey Stec.
Boettchers' genius at vocal arrangement and love of the new art of studio technology was obvious in the result. BEGIN was only the second album recorded with the new 16 track technology. Curt Boettcher ran up the highest Columbia studio bill in history in the year it took to make BEGIN. The reasons for its commercial failure might be due to the fact it was too light for FM and too complex and heavy for AM. Doug Rhodes felt that the resulting diversity of voices and musical styles on the album may have confused listeners and hampered sales. I personally feel that this album is just one of a kind. It is appreciated by those who take the time to listen. Not unlike a W.C. Fields movie, you can't do anything else and appreciate its content. Most people are not willing to devote the time necessary to listen, totally, to this album. If you are, then you just might see what all the fuss is about ... music taken to a higher level ...
Two songs, Just About The Same and Blight, were recorded after BEGIN, but the second album was never to be. At the end of 1968 internal differences, dissatisfaction with Columbia, and consumer indifference spelled the end of the group. Any chance of a reunion was ended in June,1987 with the death of Curt Boettcher.
Doug Rhodes quote in 1990, " It doesn't matter to me that BEGIN wasn't a commercial success. What matters is that we were among the first of our generation of musicians to explore recording itself as a creative process. It happened because we also explored openness and trust with one another, for we knew that was essential to being able to produce anything worthwhile on record. That togetherness is what the group was about. If that is audible, then the record is a success.

The Move - Looking Back...The Best of the Move

The Move is a 1960s rock music band from Birmingham, England, led by guitarist, singer and songwriter Roy Wood. The group evolved from several mid-'60s Birmingham groups, including Carl Wayne and the Vikings, the Nightriders and the Mayfair Set. The group's name seems to refer to the move various members of these bands made to form the group. Beside Wood, the original members of the Move were drummer Bev Bevan, bassist Chris "Ace" Kefford, vocalist Carl Wayne and guitarist Trevor Burton.
They played their first shows in early 1966, and became known for their elaborate vocal arrangements and for their taste in soul music and American West-Coast bands the Beach Boys, the Byrds, Love and Moby Grape. Their manager, Tony Secunda, got them a weekly residency at London's Marquee Club, where they appeared dressed in gangster regalia. Roy Wood wrote their first single, 1967's "Night of Fear," which began the Move's practice of musical quotation (in this case, the 1812 Overture).
"Flowers in the Rain" was the first track played on Radio 1 when it began in 1967.

The Troggs - Hit Single Anthology

Who can forget "Wild Thing"? The Troggs have always been remembered for this 60s anthem, but it is just one of their many UK hits. "With A Girl Like You", "I Can't Control Myself", "Anyway That You Want Me", "Give It To Me" and "Love Is All Around". They all followed in rapid succession to give The Troggs world-wide acclaim. Dubbed by many as the "first British punk band" they have continued playing in their own uncompromising style of good basic rock music.

The Nazz - Nazz + Nazz Nazz + Nazz III

The Nazz took their name from the song "The Nazz are Blue" by The Yardbirds from their album Roger the Engineer. That song, in turn, took its title from Lord Buckley's comic monologue, "The Nazz," which is a re-telling of the story of Jesus of Nazareth.
Formed in Philadelphia, USA in 1967, the psych-pop Nazz were not really Todd Rundgren's first band, both he and Van Osten had earlier played with Woody's Truck Stop, who were basically a white blues band and released their own album on Smash in early 1969.
Essentially a British-influenced mod band, the Nazz were quickly signed by Screen Gems Columbia who were looking for a replacement for The Monkees. 1968 saw the release of their debut album and a single Open My Eyes. Both were superb. The single was a high energy rocker with a compulsive beginning (which begged comparison to The Who's I Can't Explain), and beautifully blended harmonies. It received a lot of airplay in Britain, but inexplicably was not a hit. In the U.S. it was only a minor hit. It may well have been a much bigger hit, but many stations preferred to play its flip side Hello It's Me, which was also a minor hit when re-issued as the 'A' side to Crowded in 1969.
The album was full of variety - aside from the stunning Open My Eyes, it contained a number of fine rock ballads such as See What You Can Be, Hello It's Me, and If That's The Way You Feel and other dynamic hard rock numbers such as Back Of Your Mind, When I Get My Plane and She's Goin' Down (the latter showing a distinct Hendrix influence). Despite its acclaim, in retrospect, as a superb album, Nazz did not sell, either in the U.S. or the UK. Released at the height of the American West Coast's heyday, perhaps it cut across the general musical tide that year. However, it became a sought after collectors' item.
Nazz Nazz, recorded in Los Angeles, was a more consistent album and arguably the band's best. It was originally planned as a double album, but relationships within the group, particularly between Rundgren and Mooney were beginning to deteriorate to such an extent that only a single album was possible. (Nazz III was later released after the band split and made up of left overs from the earlier recording sessions.) Opening track, Forget All About It was a cohesive, melodic number. Not Wrong Long was the band's third U.S. single - the final one to be released in the UK. Under The Ice and Rain Rider were further examples of their heavier brand of rock. Gonna Cry Today and Letters Don't Count were melodic ballads, whilst Meridian Leeward was a rather strange number about a piloting human-eating pig. The final track, an eleven minute extravaganza entitled A Beautiful Song, married together all of The Nazz's musical styles as well as many of the influences on them.
Rundgren's departure for a solo career in 1970 brought the Nazz to an end, and Nazz III, compiled from material from the Nazz Nazz sessions, was issued posthumously...Nazz - Nazz (1968, SGC)

Mu - Mu

In 1969 Beefheart's guitarist Jeff Cotton and Merrell Fankhauser formed Mu (basically a reunion of the Exiles). Their first album, Mu (RTV, 1971), reissued as The Maui Album (Reckless, 1988), contains the mystical/tribal suite Eternal Thirst, the exotic novelty Mumbella Baye La La, a spastic blues number a` la Beefheart (Ain't No Blues), the ethereal psychedelia of Blue Form and Brother Lew. Mu released three singles before disbanding: Ballad of Brother Lew/ Nobody Wants To Shine (Mantra, 1972), One More Day/You've Been Here Before (MU, 1972), On Our Way To Hana/Too Naked For Demetrius (MU, 1973). Cotton moved back to Los Angeles and became a priest.
The material recorded in 1973-74 for Mu's second album would eventually surface on The Last Album (Appaloosa, 1982), reissued as End Of An Era (Reckless, 1988). This material is less psychedelic and more exotic, laid-back, spiritual. The double-disc MU (Sundazed, 1997) contains a selection of both albums and the singles.
