The Ill Wind - Flashes
Originally known as The Prophets, with a singer called Judy Bradbury, this band were originally from Wellsley, Massachusetts but based themselves in Boston. Clearly, a hippie as opposed to a punk band, their album is a fine one, with their sound moulded by Conny Devanney's crystal clear vocals. On tracks like Dark World her voice is beautiful, while on others, notably the widely recorded High Flying Bird, Hung Up Chick and Walkin' And Singin', it blends in beautifully with that of her male counterpart, Richard Griggs. Also of note is the unusual People Of The Night and the sleepy Full Cycle. This album is strongly recommended. The Ill Wind - Flashes

The Fleshtones - Living Legends Series + Roman Gods
The group formed in 1976 in Queens with vocalist/keyboardist Peter Zaremba, guitarist Keith Streng, bassist Jan Marek Pukulski, and drummer Bill Milhizer and aimed to return rock and roll to the simplicity and unself-consciousness of the '50s and early-'60s. The Fleshtones debuted at CBGB's on May 19, 1976. Though they were derided by some fans and critics on the scene as a "twist band," and viewed as outsiders because of their then-unfashionable allegiance to the spirit of 50s and 60s rock & roll, The Fleshtones drew a large local following in the late 70s and played often at CBGBs and Max's Kansas City. Stalk-Forrest Group - St. Cecilia - The California Album
Stalk-Forrest Group (aka Oaxaxa; previously known as The Soft White Underbelly) recorded material in 1969 and again in 1970 for Elektra Records. An album was assembled by the label from these sessions, but never commercially released. However, it has long been rumoured, and is still possible, that acetates of the album exist. At this point, only the 45 listed above is confirmed to have been issued at the time. Most of the music recorded by the band has been circulating on cassette for twenty years or more - in varying degrees of fidelity.
The material possesses both the sophistication of their highly-regarded seventies work as The Blue Oyster Cult and the ethereal, druggy late sixties sound associated with West Coast bands like Quicksilver Messenger Service, it's no stretch to say that The Stalk-Forrest Group will find wide acceptance with viewers of this blog. Don't miss this!

Human Beinz - Evolution
Absolutely one of the best albums from a Nuggets-type band. People remember them for “Nobody But Me,” but on this second album they wrote their own songs and showed all sorts of growth. Great pop, garage and proto-hard rock, including an absolute monster instrumental blowout at the end. Human Beinz came from Youngstown Ohio, and were originally known as The Human Beingz. Under the guidance of their producer Alex "Lez" De Azevedo, they developed into a fine psychedelic pop group with a sense of humour. Their second album contained one of the all-time punk classics, Nobody But Me and the third "Evolution" too is recommended - consisting of anglophile pop, weird psychedelic ballads and some great psychedelia. The third album also contained a 7 minute guitar freakout April 15th, which was arguably their finest moment. part1

The Zerfas - The Zerfas
This album, by the Indianapolis outfit featuring the Zerfas brothers David and Herman, is one of the best and probably the best-known self-pressed 70's US psych albums ever to have seen the light of day. All the material is self-penned which comes as a surprise as the tracks are uniformly strong, with lots of keyboards, sound effects, and some great harmonies. Masterful '73 private pressing on the 700 West label. Beatlesque harmonies, Pink Floydish experimentation, rock and roll execution. It about all works and virtually everyone loves it. Virtually. Side 1 is perfect. Side 2 just about the same.Very rare and expensive before the reissue came out.

C.A. Quintet - Trip Thru Hell (Remastered with Bonus Tracks)
Ah yes, the "Trip", an LP so packed with talent and originality it alone justifies the existence of the underground collector circuit. You can pick just about any major 60s LP and this will blow it away on all counts. I assume anyone reading this already knows Ken Erwin's conceptual acid psych monster. The album commences and concludes with the 12.30 minute long instrumental title track, which at times contains some interesting sound effects. However, the standout track is a piece of classic paranoid acid dementia Cold Spider.

Flamin' Groovies - Supersnazz
There are few memories nicer than the rock of the Fifties and the great late-afternoon cartoons we grew up with. The fine thing about the Flamin' Groovies album, which is merely adequate otherwise, is the fidelity with which it sets the Looney Tune spirit (exuberantly childlike satire) in perfectly realized soundscapes thumpingly reminiscent of the good old days. Supersnazz indeed: Chuck Berry hot licks, pistol-packin' mamas, rockin' pneumonia and the boogie woogie flu!—sans corroding traces of the condescension, dilettantism and sweaty strain which usually mar this kind of thing. The Groovies, like no other group working in this area, communicate that sense of truly youthful enthusiasm and fun which was at the heart of early rock. Their music is fresh, innocent, and feels good night or day. No qualifications: it is truly open and ingenuous - Lester Bangspart1

Kak - Kak (Epic 26429) 1969
This highly talented, underrated band from Sacramento in California produced what is now one of the most sought-after psychedelic albums. Mellow laid-back tracks like I've Got Time and Flowing By are merged with up-tempo numbers like Disbelievin' and Electric Sailor. The excellent guitar playing of Patten and Yoder is evident throughout the album. Most tracks, particularly the final one Lemonaide Kid had considerable commercial potential and the band was clearly a victim of under-exposure.part1

The Bachs - Out Of The Bachs
This is a highly collectable garage-psych classic from Chicago, indeed only 100 copies were ever pressed so original copies inevitably change hands for megabucks. Some of the finest garage cuts include You're Mine, Free Fall and Minister To A Mind Diseased, whilst My Independence Day and the superb Tables Of Grass Fields are more psychedelic. Essential. Just dig that distorted fuzz guitar on Minister To A Mind Diseased. part1

Kate & Anna McGarrigle - Kate & Anna McGarrigle
Born in Montreal of mixed English and French-Canadian origin, Kate and Anna grew up in the Laurentian Mountains village of Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts. Taught piano by the village nuns, their family life revolved around music with regular singing sessions around the family ivories. Kate and Anna absorbed a rich musical heritage ranging from Victorian ballads to blues and Appalachian French-Canadian folk songs to music by contemporary singer-songwriters. In the 1960s, Kate went to McGill University to study engineering while Anna studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal. They continued to write songs and sing together and in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the sisters were active in the local folk scene, becoming regular features at the legendary Cafe Lena in Saratoga, New York. A tape of their songs made its way to Los Angeles where Maria Muldaur was preparing her first solo album. She ended up singing two of their songs, and producer Joe Boyd persuaded Warner Bros. to bring them out to sing harmonies and record a demo of their own. The resulting album, Kate & Anna McGarrigle (Warner Bros. 1976/Hannibal 1994), was recognized by most critics as an immediate classic and was chosen by Melody Maker as the "Best Album of the Year." and by Stereo Review as "Record of the Year."

Zakary Thaks - Face to Face
One of the best garage bands of the '60s, and one of the best teenage rock groups of all time, Zakary Thaks released a half-dozen regionally distributed singles in 1966 and 1967; some were hits in their hometown of Corpus Christi, TX, but none were heard elsewhere until they achieved renown among '60s collectors. Heavily indebted (as were so many bands) to R&B-influenced British heavyweights like the Stones, the Kinks, and the Yardbirds, the group added a thick dollop of Texas raunch to their fuzzy, distorted guitars and hell-bent energy. Most importantly, they were first-rate songwriters, with the breakneck "Bad Girl" (later compiled on Pebbles, Vol. 2), "Won't Come Back," the smoking "Face to Face," "Can't You Hear Your Daddy's Footsteps," and the folk-rock/Merseybeat hybrid "Please" ranking among the top echelon of American '60s garage rock. Their 1967 singles found the group moving into psychedelic territory; some songs betrayed a Moby Grape influence, and some good melodic numbers were diluted by poppy arrangements that recalled the Buckinghams and Grass Roots. Lead singer Chris Gerniottis, only 15 when Zakary Thaks began making records, joined another interesting Corpus Christi garage/psychedelic group, the Liberty Bell.

Xhol Caravan - Electrip
XHOL was one of the first bands who participated at the send of the 60s to the launch of the Krautrock movement in Germany. Nevertheless their music cannot be categorised. Their roots came from rhythm’n blues with soul tendencies. With their second album “electrip” they rapidly found their own style which can be considered as an original fusion of free jazz, psychedelic rock and electronic experimentations. Very dynamic their jazz rock can sometimes be compared with the spirit of the psychedelic soul developed by SOFT MACHINE. However the unusual use of electric instruments and electronic manipulations made XHOL absolutely unique. After "Electric", the band carries on their musical adventure with two great and totally free jazz rock albums. Dominated by endless, electric and cool improvisations "Hau Ruk" is a must for fusion and jazz lovers. Their last studio album “Motherf**kers GmbH" recorded in 1972 is a monument. All the compositions have their own feelings, sometimes delivering captivating and powerful blues, kraut, and jazz elements. However this album put the stress on a second fascinating side of XHOL’s musical universe: experimental organ works and psych/ folk interludes. This last album is nearer to Krautrock mesmerizing musical themes, more twisted, spacey and devoted to avant-garde. XHOL’s influence on a bench of german prog bands and on the adepts of free rock music in general is undeniable. Xhol Caravan - Electrip

Creation of Sunlight - Creation of Sunlight
Despite the reissues many are still unfamiliar with this Sunset Strip-style psych wonderama, so full of 60s summer charm you'll play it over and over. Strawberry Alarmclock's first two LPs are the obvious reference for these guys and they pull it off with equal talent and class, not a dull moment. The perfect summer album. With harmonies to die for, colorful arrangements that highlight great organ and guitar playing, and, most of all, an album full of hit-worthy songs, this is an all-time classic. Like the similar SAC, at times the oh-so-happy sound veers towards the cheesy, but never quite pushes it too far. Instantly memorable, but also with a lot of depth. Every song is a winner. In a better world they would have been superstars.Creation of Sunlight - Creation of Sunlight (Windi ST 1001-1002) 1968 R4

History of UK Underground Folk Rock - Vol. 1-2
You can think of this as sort of an equivalent to specialty series like Nuggets, Rubble, and Pebbles that unearthed very obscure 1960s rock, the difference being that this focuses on British folk-rock of the late '60s and '70s. Although artists like 14.Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, the Incredible String Band, and Pentangle are fairly popular and well-known, there have been very few discs dedicated to excavation of other bands working along the same lines that never got anywhere (commercially that is). This CD is compiled from rare albums, along with presenting previously unavailable songs by the Trees, Tir Na Nog, Mellow Candle, and Harison. Now, when the Trees and Mellow Candle are by far the most recognizable names on the track listing, you know this is digging deep. Note, however, that unlike many anthologies of obscure genre music -- for whatever genre -- the quality on this and Vol. 2 of this series is pretty high, and virtually guaranteed to appeal to fans of classic British folk-rock in the Fairport/Steeleye/Incredibles mold. Whether high female vocals in the Sandy Denny/Jacqui McShee style or fairly exotic acoustic-based folk-psych is your bag, there's a lot of it here.

Nick Drake - Fives Leaves Left
It seems like Nick Drake came out of nowhere when he arrived on the music scene in the late 1960s. His music sounds like nothing that came before it and no matter how many people try, no one will ever be able to match the pure genius of his work. Although all of his albums are never less than fantastic, "Five Leaves Left" is probably the most cohesive and best presents his complete artistic statement. Drake's songs are truly magical. His harmony is always unique and unusual but never too complicated to allow his technical mastery as a composer and guitarist to control the simple, understated beauty of his songs. His lyrics are mysterious and seem to come from another world. You could analyze them to death but the best way to experience the power of his music is to simply listen and absorb it all without question...somehow you know what he's singing about and all else in the world simply seems unimportant...The string arrangements on this recording are always tasteful and add another layer of tortured beauty to Drake's mellow and morose songs. His voice sounds peaceful and has a complete lack of anger or hate. Nick Drake - Fives Leaves Left

Manu Chao - Live Mendoza 2000
Manu Chao helped begin the Latin Alternative movement, way back in the '80s — although it had no name then — and in his later work he cuts a cross-cultural swathe across styles and geographic boundaries. Chao, whose real name is Oscar Tramor, was born on June 26, 1961 in Paris, to Spanish parents — his father Ramon Chao a respected writer, comes from Galicia, his mother Bilbao. Growing up bilingual, he was also influenced by the punk scene across the English Channel that happened while he was still in his teens. As a teen he played in bands, including a rockabilly outfit called Les Hot Pants, which won local critical praise but never went anywhere before breaking up. After that, Chao and his cousin began Mano Negra, named for an anarchist organization which operated in Spain. They recorded their first single, "Mala Vida," for a small label, but its French success led them to a contract with Virgin — something many early fans decried as selling out.Manu Chao - live in Mendoza [05.04.2000]

The Nightcrawlers - The Little Black Egg
Wellknown folkrock/garage LP from Chuck Conlon and pals who had a minor hit with the strange title track. The rest is pretty solid, all originals with a jangly local sound similar to the first Love LP. The Nightcrawlers are best remembered for the haunting and cryptic folk-rocker Little Black Egg which personifies their sound - a sultry garage version of the Beau Brummels, with their plaintive Searchers-like melodies and a hint at the Stones' shake and rattle in the more upbeat material. Little Black Egg became a local hit and the band got plenty of gigs. Live most of the songs featured Rob Rouse on lead vocals and they performed more upbeat and soulful material, whereas Conlan sang lead on his compositions in the studio with Rouse or Thomason on harmonies. When Kapp picked up on the band they pushed to get more material out of a band that was raw but had obvious hit potential. Little Black Egg was re-released and started picking up in other regions; it would be pushed for a third time and eventually hit the Billboard charts in early 1967, long after the original band who recorded it had split. Impala Syndrome - Impala Syndrome (Parallax P-4002) 1969
Originally from Venezuela, where they were known as Los Impala, this group relocated to Madrid, Spain in 1965. After a few months, their singer Henry Stephens left to pursue a solo career, recording an EP as Lord Henry Con Los Impala. After a few years the band moved to Chicago, releasing their Impala Syndrome album which is well worth checking out. An effective blend of melodic, laid back songs (Love Grows A Flower, Land Of No Time and the superb Eastern-influenced finale, Run (Don't Look Behind)) combined with fuzz guitar numbers like Too Much Time and Let Them Try. New Love Time is also rather catchy but Leave, Eve sounds unashamedly like The Rascals' Its Wonderful.

Majic Ship - The Complete Recordings
Majic Ship - The Complete RecordingsMajic Ship evolved out of The Primitives, an outfit formed by Ray Rifice and Tommy Nikosey whilst at Saint Anselm's school in New York at the tender age of thirteen!
Night Time Music was selected as WMCA's "Pick Of The Week" in Dec '68, and the soulful Hummin' was picked as its follow-up, charting regionally, and allowing the band to tour around the East Coast. After a further two singles, including the excellent Green Plant, Jeff Bilotta quit... and the band, wishing to return to their rock roots, went back into the studio to record their debut album.
Like many bands of the era, their album was largely overlooked at the time, although it is in retrospect a definite 'classic', with the years spent gigging and recording 45s resulting in a well produced and 'rounded' album that flows with a graceful beauty absent in many chart acts. However also like many of their counterparts, their progress was brought to an untimely end when in 1971 their rented apartment in Staten Island burned down together with all their equipment. With no insurance, the band called it quits.

Jeff Beck - Live at BB King Blues Club
Recorded live, a day before the 2003 tour finishes, when Jeff played at The B.B. King's Blues Club And Grill, New York, NY. Not available at the record stores in town, you can only buy this through www.jeffbeckbootlegs.com. Jeff's guitar sounds are mixed apparently loud, CD is packaged simply in a paper sleeve, and no "Epic" name or logo are found on its cover. Bootleg style. Jeff's performance is exactly far from carefulness, but that reminds us that we always feel his guitar's charm in that kind of roughness.Jeff Beck - Live at BB King Blues Club

Clearlight - Les Contes Du Singe Fou
Essentially French keyboardist Cyrille Verdeaux and an ever-changing list of collaborators, among them Christian Boule and Gilbert Artman, Clearlight was among the most well-known French symphonic progressive rock bands of the 1970s. Their massive, occasionally psychedelic sound showed a different side to Verdeaux than his later, more new age records. One of the first bands signed to the fledgling Virgin Records in the early 1970s, Clearlight has been compared to such progressive bands as Yes and Genesis as well as more experimental groups like Gong.1977's Les Contes du Singe Fou was a collaboration with British vocalist/lyricist Ian Bellamy and was among the group's more psychedelic works.

Alan Stivell - Master Serie
Alan Stivell is a performer most notable for his celtic harp, who combines the old and the new with grace and precision. He has amassed a huge knowledge of past musical idioms and translates them into modern relevance with his passionate rhythms and lyrics that sometimes border on despairing, and which are always heartfelt. This compilation disk emphasizes Stivell's early work (the first 4-5 albums or so from 1971-74), which is widely regarded as his best and most exciting period. The selection of songs is excellent, reflecting both his more more delicate folksy side (e.g. "Reflets", "Ys", "Suite des Montagnes") and his more rocking side ("Pop Plinn",
"Hep Brezhoneg", etc.). What makes this compilation especially notable is that it contains studio versions of "Tri Martolod", "Pop Plinn", and "The Wind of Keltia"-- which were released as singles and are unavailable on any of Stivell's 'regular' CDs. (Live versions of these tunes are available on _Live at the Olympia_, but those who want to hear the studio versions have no choice but to get this disk).

Folkdove - Folkdove (French Psych Folk 1975)
There are many French folk gems most of them are totally unknown outside of France. Only some limited reissues, like the 2 items from Mormos, or some compilations from Malicorne. Folkdove from Brittany (Bretagne) is also such a gem, which was originally issued as a 400-600 private press. This is now reissued on CD from a "with no noise system remastered vinyl recording", with perfect sound. It doesn't really sound too different from the best UK examples which have medieval inspirations, subtle original and inspired arrangements, and beautiful vocals (items like Midwinter, Mourning Phase,..). What confirmed this original sound were some old instruments which were especially made for the band, like psalter, spinet, and medieval dulcimer. A couple of songs have very beautiful vocal arrangements. Often the six-piece group arrangements are sparse and rich at the same time. The female vocals for instance have a rich coloured sound too, which are already a blessing to hear. A must-have.Folkdove - Folkdove (French Psych Folk 1975)

Flibbertigibbet - Whistling Jigs to the Moon (UK Folk Psych 1978)
If you're a fan of Mellow Candle, and one of their female singers, mainly Alison Williams, then you'll love this group and CD. Alison's beautiful voice sounds just as good at the time she was in Mellow Candle, and some of the songs are similar, but still quite different. This group was from South Africa, and it says that the LP has remained unknown to collector's of rare records until this CD release. It's just beautiful music, and outstanding vocals by both Alison and one of the other members. The guitarist that was in Mellow Candle plays on this album, and there's some great guitar playing.Flibbertigibbet - Whistling Jigs to the Moon (UK Folk Psych 1978)
