Fotheringay - Fotheringay
Fotheringay was formed in 1970 by singer Sandy Denny (Ex-Strawbs ) upon her departure from ‘Fairport Convention’, together with her future husband, Australian songwriter Trevor Lucas (Ex-Eclection, ), Gerry Conway (Ex-Eclection) and two former members of ’Poet and the One Man band’ Jerry Donahue and Pat Donaldson. ‘Fotheringay’ played Folk-Rock similar to ‘Fairport Convention’, introducing Jazz-elements like ‘Pentangle‘.The band drew it’s name from Fotheringay Castle, where Mary Queen Of Scots was imprisoned in England, a name, that Denny had already used for one of her finest compositions on the second ‘Fairport Convention’ release “What Did We Do On Our Holidays”(1969).
In 1970 the band recorded their lone self titled album with producer Joe Boyd. The record mixed Rock, Folk and Jazz-elements and sounded similar to , ‘Fairport Convention’ with a less rockier side, Trevor Lucas rhythm-guitar-work giving the record an overall lighter feeling. The record contains two traditionals, among them the outstanding “Banks Of The Nile”, a Gordon Lighfoot composition “The Way I Feel”, a Dylan cover “Too Much Of Nothing” and original songs by Denny, (among them “Nothing More” and “The Sea”), Lucas and Dave Cousins.
All credit goes to GarColga from 8 Days In April.

Moby Grape - Moby Grape
Yet another unjustly forgotten 60s group. This is a weird story all around. Skip Spence, a budding singer-songwriter, was recruited by the Jefferson Airplane to play drums (!) in their original lineup. He cut one record with them and quit in mid-1966, at which point he and the Airplane's manager hatched a scheme of forming a new band in the same mold. Like the Airplane, Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield, the new group was to be a harmonizing alliance of singer-songwriters with a fan following of rebellious teenage girls. And like those groups, Moby Grape was to go within just a few months from initial rehearsals to full-blown recording sessions.The plan almost worked: Spence landed four talented songwriters, all from the West Coast and all with extensive gigging credentials. The group's first album was a careful blend of compositions by all five band members. Released within weeks of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, it was full of trendy pseudo-psychedelic two-minute pop songs. At this point, however, everything fell apart. The record company's efforts to hype the album's release (e.g., foolishly releasing five debut singles at once) were a total flop. The same week, three of the band members were busted for drug possession and (ahem) contributing to the delinquency of minors. The album's cover photo had to be modified when someone noticed that it showed a band member flashing a finger.
And so on. Things got worse and worse, with the group falling out with its manager, its performances deteriorating, and Spence consuming enough hallucinogenics to kill a stadium full of Deadheads. In early '68 Spence flipped out completely, running amok with a fire axe and landing in Bellevue for six months (!), which needless to say weakened the group's second album. The Grape cut a third album without him, and later a bizarre country-western fourth album with only three of the original band members, but the spark - and opportunity to cash in on the nation's Summer of Love cultural detour - was gone forever.

Oasis - Oasis 1973 (Cranbus no #)
Oasis - Oasis 1973 (Cranbus no #)This LP was pressed in Canada but distributed primarily in California.
Light hippie folkrock with great male/female harmonies, strong tracks and a general uplifting quality about it.
Although this album was pressed in Canada and lists no home base for the group on the cover, it is known that they were based in Marin County. The album, which is pop rock with male and female vocals, sounds like a cross between Pablo Cruise and later-day It's A Beautiful Day - which is defined as "psychedelic" by some record dealers in Europe. They had help from David Crosby , who even on coke knew good music when he heard it.

Roy Harper & Jimmy Page - Whatever Happened To Jugula
In 1980, Harper sang backing vocals on the Kate Bush song "Breathing". The Work of Heart album released in 1982 marked the formation of his own record label with Mark Thompson, entitled Public Records. Throughout 1984, Harper toured the United Kingdom with Jimmy Page, performing a predominantly acoustic set at folk festivals under various guises such as The MacGregors, and Themselves. They released an album called Whatever Happened to Jugula? under Harper's name but co-credited to Jimmy Page. Roy Harper & Jimmy Page - Whatever Happened To Jugula

Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle
In 1968 Warner Brothers were preparing to make pop music history by releasing an album by a young musician and songwriter called Van Dyke Parks. Song Cycle's budget of $$,$$$ made it the most expensive album ever recorded back then. The Warner bosses weren't worried, they knew it was going to be the biggest thing since Sgt Pepper and probably bigger. They were wrong, they were very wrong.When Song Cycle was released it just didn't sell. It had received unprecedented pre-release rave reviews saying it things like:
"The most important, creative and advanced pop recording since Sgt Pepper";
"a work of creative genius";
"the most vital piece of musical Americana since Gershwin".
Parks also had an impressive pedigree as a musician on The Byrds '5D' and the first Tim Buckley album; songwriter for Harpers Bizarre and others; a musical arranger on Disney's 'The Jungle Book' and most famously as a collaborator with Beached Boy Brian Wilson. Despite the advance press and the pedigree it's hard to see how on earth Warners thought this was going to be a real big seller. It is undoubtedly a work of unique vision and ambition. Truly a masterpiece but with zero "radio friendly" 3 minute sound bites packed with catchy hooks. Even today Song Cycle is not an easy listening experience but it is a challenging and ultimately rewarding one.
I can think of no other record like it. Song Cycle is a musical travelogue, a sonic trip across the America of Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, Busby Berkeley musicals and John Ford Westerns.

Even More Eastern Psych : John Berberian & The Rock East Ensemble - Middle Eastern Rock
Middle East ethnicity from New York City, more than two decades before the rather hyped "World Music" movement. John Berberian, an accomplished oud player and a student in Business Studies at Columbia University in the mid-sixties, gathered around him a troop of skilled musicians to perform the music of his forefathers. The pricey and much-sought Music Of The Middle East ups the swing'n'swirl factor with some frantic whirling-dervish workouts. The flamenco-like flourishes in Oud Solo are irresistible.

The Trees - The Garden of Jane Delawney + On the Shore
The debut album by The Trees, easily in the top three UK folk rock bands of the 70's, if not all time. Dating from 1970 the album blends trippy, twin lead guitar, West Coast acid rock with lilting English folk. The delicate female vocals of Celia Humphries and a haunting production weave a dark magical Celtic spell over misty musical moorlands. Captivating, beautiful and timeless.The Trees - The Garden of Jane Delawney

On this their second album from 1971, majestic vocals sweep over misted moors as spiralling electric guitar solos clash like Celtic knot weave in the dawn. Celia Humphris fragile vocals conjure up the England of yore and the band mix westcoast acid rock with a dark and mossy folk yearning. Simply wonderous.The Trees - On the Shore

The Leathercoated Minds - A Trip Down The Sunset Strip
Ah. Early Jean Jaques (aka J.J.) Cale and a classic slice of exploito rock. It doesn't get much better than this... 1967 found producer/record executive Amos "Snuff" Garrett more than willing to cash in on popular music tastes. Interested in marketing a quickie LP that cashed in on the burgeoning West Coast psych scene, Garrett promptly recruited sessions guitarist Cale and the husband and wife Roger and Terrye Tillison, who as The Gypsy Trips (love the name), had previously recorded the single "Rock 'n' Roll Gypsies" b/w "Ain't It Hard" on the small World Pacific label. Like Cale, Roger was an Oklahoma native. Released on Garrett's newly formed Viva Records, 1967's "A Trip Down the Sunset Strip" was billed as a concept piece - "In this album, we are trying to paint sound pictures of the Strip - the voices you hear above each recording are the actual voices of the Strip's inhabitants. The traffic noises are real - recorded on location. The songs contained in the album are "What's happening" - most of them got their start in the Hollywood area and later became national hits." Nothing like marketing ... With Cale producing, there wasn't anything wrong with top-40 covers such as "Psychotic Reaction", "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Kicks". While the covers were largely rote in nature, Cale and the Tillisons turned in some nice vocal performances. The one exception was Cale's rather ragged vocal performance on Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man". Cale also distinguished himself via his guitar work. Among the highlights, while clearly added to the LP as filler material, were Cale's four original instrumentals. Anyone hearing "Sunset and Clark", "Non-Stop" or "Pot Luck" will instantly know why Eric Clapton subsequently elected to record Cale's "After Midnight". Killer guitars throughout.part1

Gryphon - Red Queen to Gryphon Three + Raindance + Glastonbury Carol
British experimental folk band, who started all acoustic, with a blend of medieval, folk & progressive styles into a very interesting and unique sound. They make extensive use of acoustic string instruments, including renaissantist and modern acquitment as well. Wind instruments are another feature on their music, very well balanced with some vintage keyboards, giving a progish appeal to it.
The first album is primarily folk based; they were just getting started. Their magnum opus presented itself next with the album "Red Queen to Gryphon Three". Based around the concept of a chess game, the four masterful compositions are engaging and spectacular. Highly recommended for everyone, at least as a matter of curiosity!

Electric Prunes - Mass in F Minor
By the time Mass in F Minor was recorded, the band broke up halfway in the recording of the album, so the first half was done by the original lineup, and for some odd reason, the other half was recorded by an entirely new band consisting of Canadian musicians. One of the songs on Mass in F Minor might be familiar to all those who watched Easy Rider: "Kyrie Eleison", as that was one of the songs, along with "Born to be Wild" and "The Pusher" (Steppenwolf) and "Don't Bogart That Joint" (Fraternity of Man) that was featured on that movie. While Mass in F Minor falls short of a classic in my book, it's still a pretty fascinating album to include in your collection.
