Walter Wegmüller - Tarot

Tarot is amongst the most remarkable projects in Krautrock, covering the whole range of cosmic music, and aptly elaborately packaged in a box with numerous cards and inserts. The first 3 sides cover a range of moods, with folky touches, strange electronic diversions & fiery space rock drives, fronted by guitars, synthesizers & mellotron. The fourth side is encompassed by a single suite that surges beyond ASH RA TEMPEL, previewing the sound of the Cosmic Jokers. Throughout Walter is our guide, narrating in a most imaginative manner his visions of the Tarot, in a weirdly accented German . At one of the Tarot sessions, ASH RA TEMPEL's Join Inn was also recorded, whilst the dynamic trio were waiting for the rest of the musicians to turn up!

Mormos - Great Wall Of China + Magic Spell Of Mother's Wrath

Mormos first album, the acid prog folk album "Great Wall of China" (France,Spalax 1971) had definitely some ISB influences too. Their "Magic Spell" from 1972 was more acid folk, with more clarinet and so on. Both are classics. According to Forced Exposure : "In the early 70s, James Cuomo, Tobia Taylor and Sandy Spencer all came to Paris with a NY experimental theatre group's production of 'La Mama' and decided to stay on afterwards. The American band based in France that evolved from US psych band Spoils Of War. A great album of off the wall folk/psych similar to Principle Edwards Magic Theatre, Comus, the Incredible String Band, and Doctor Strangely Strange but with a character all of it's own. Fragile, haunting and weird but with beautiful melodies and a rural druggy mystery. Great Wall Of China was their first album, released in 1971. It comprises of a wonderful progressive music which is a mix of folk, classical and traditional instruments and influences. A clever use of vocal arrangements and rhythms that we find here gives the group a completely unique sound.

Moving Gelatine Plates - The World Of Genius Hans

Moving Gelatine Plates - The World Of Genius Hans
Moving Gelatine Plates were one of France's most interesting groups. But, they didn't sound French at all. The musicians seemed quite inspired by progressive-jazz era Soft Machine, the Beatles, and Frank Zappa's post-1969 jazz compositions. The World of Genius Hans, the group's second album, was released in 1972. We find a band featuring horns(sax, alto sax, trombone, and trumpets), a guitarist, a bassist, and an incredibly busy drummer. The horn section really stands out here. Their sound combines the frantic jazz melodies of early Soft Machine with the complexity of a typical early Frank Zappa composition, and a noticeable klezmer influence. Somehow, the guitarist manages to create interesting melodies that don't follow the horn parts at all. The guitar playing is mostly jazzy, while at other times prog-like. The drummer plays with the energy of Italy's energetic drummers, and the jazzy touch of, say, Robert Wyatt. In all, you get compositions that are frantic, sometimes long, and unpredictable that feature theme, tempo changes, and odd-time signatures galore. There is also a noticeable psychedelic, and Beatle-esque influence during many sections.

Morgen - Morgen (Probe 4509 - 1969)

This album is a definite yardstick for the late 60s guitar psych style. Despite its major label origins the sound is remarkably raw and garagey, with no compromises anywhere. Some rate it as the best major label LP all over and it sure blows a lot of megararities away, as well as ALL the LA heavy psych competition from the same era, with an intense and genuinely psychedelic mood. Punky vocals, great and highly original material (especially on side 1), acid guitars that won't quit - I can't see anyone into psych not digging this.

Erkin Koray - Elektronik Türküler

Of all the musical and sub-cultural scenes that happened in 60's, psychedelia was the most effective one in Turkey. It started one year later than USA and Europe but lasted much longer... Psychedelia end underground music brought a new dimension to Turkish listeners; while the rest of the nation were happy with its oriental overtones, the Turkish music fans found that it was what they felt inside really! So psychedelia influence was at a much different scope than it had on other countries. By 1969 all codes on the birth of a big rock music scene was set and Turkish rock had five more years of kingdom with many sub-types contained within. After 75-76, it took its toll with changing political, musical and social climates and before 1979 came it was all over...

The recording qualities are quite primitive as studios did not have good recordings equipments until mid 70's. Also not many bands found the chance of releasing albums: the scene was a 45 RPM singles dominant scene and due to many reasons they are very rare and very hard to find in good condition.

Lollipop Shoppe - Just Colour (UNI 1968) Upgrade@192 VBR

Despite "You must be a witch" of Pebbles fame this LP is a bit overlooked. I think it's one of the craziest major label LPs around and along with SAC the best on the label. Fred Cole's vocals are so far out you wonder how they ever got a contract plus tracks like the awesome "Underground railroad" blows even private press stuff away. Perhaps more eccentric than truly good, but should be checked out. Lord Tim Hudson tried a Seeds-style hype with them but it never really clicked.

The Standells - Try It

The Standells - Try It
Despite the claims of their big 1966 national hit, "Dirty Water", Boston was not home to the Standells, a group of Hollywood hustlers who managed a cameo in an episode of The Munsters early into their career. The singer, Dick Dodd was an ex-Mouseketeer, Larry Tamblyn, on organ, was brother of actor Russ. Meeting Ed Cobb, a former member of the Four Preps who became their manager (and manager of labelmates and rivals Chocolate Watchband), changed them into punks, which is why they've always qualified as "garage rock". "Dirty Water" (written by Cobb, leaving his clean-cut past behind) had an attitude, a snarl, and a bold fuzz guitar lead, which pretty much describes all of their subsequent work; "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White" was their second biggest hit, a cowbell-and-guitar driven rocker that peaked at #43. "Try It", from 1967 was their most notorious; a super fuzzydelicized endorsement of drugs and sex, it was banned from the airwaves. In 1968, Dodd left the always-unstable lineup and although versions of the band survived into 1970, it never recorded again.

Cambodian Rocks - Vol. 0-1-2-3

Collectors of punk singles will be familiar with the seminal 1977 seven-inch EP by the St Louis band The Screamin' Mee-Mees. It is Paul Wheeler, the original bassist on that record, who is credited with bringing this amazing batch of music to light. In the mid-1990s Wheeler lived in Japan for a few years and, before his return home to the US, decided to visit Southeast Asia. In one of those stories psychedelic collectors love to attach to obscure and neglected music, while traveling through Cambodia Wheeler hitched a ride in a truck on his way to Ankor Wat. The driver kept playing cassettes of odd fuzz-punk Cambodian music and Wheeler later found piles of similar tapes at a roadside market. The music owed a lot to the US acid-rock and psychedelia of the period, BUT it was not just some listless copy of the Great Cultural Exporter's tunes... This was a vigorous, locally-inflected reinterpretation of the US psych sound by top-notch artists... And it rocked!
Wheeler never found out the names of any of the songs or artists, but by the time he got back to Phnom Penh, he was able to hum the tunes well enough to score copies from local cassette peddlars. When he got back to the States, he released the pick of them on a compilation called Cambodian Rocks.
These tapes found their way into the hands of noted NYC collectors Paul Major and Mike Ascherman and on to their tiny Parallel World label. All of the lyrics are in Khmer (I'm guessing) and, despite some Asian elements in the music, this is well played 1960s rock. The artists on this compilation had clearly listened to their share of rock & roll, presumably from Armed Forces Radio. Some garage elements come into play, such as organ and fuzz guitar, but these musicians rely more on reverb and wah-wah than on fuzz. The music on Cambodian Rocks is remarkably fresh and the instrumentation varies somewhat from track to track.
