One of the greatest garage bands of the '60s, The Standells' name would stand even if they had recorded nothing else but the classics Dirty Water and 19th Nervous Breakdown (both included on The Hot Ones). As it is, they are (along with the Count Five) one of the best -remembered garage bands of the 60s/early 70s era and the music on this album is proof positive of the young, loud and snotty sound they made.

The subtitle of this album reads "The Difficult Third Album," and in fact 27 years passed between Dr. Strangely Strange's second and third releases. Their first album, Kip of the Serenes, was a singsong psychedelic folk record while their second, Heavy Petting, employed more rock and free-form ideas. This album incorporates traditional Irish music, blues-rock, and acoustic rock & roll, thus separating itself significantly from the two earlier releases.

One of the finest and most original Australian bands of the Sixties, The Loved Ones began when a group of Melbourne Trad Jazz players decided to switch to Rhythm & Blues.
Changing their name from The Red Onions Jazz band in October 1965, the band soon found themselves with a recording contract.
Their first two releases were both original compositions - The Loved One (which became a hit reaching Number 15 on the charts and was covered successfully many years later by Australian stadium-rockers, INXS), and its follow-up Ever Lovin' Man (which peaked locally at Number 2).
The Loved Ones remain one of the most revered of all Australian 1960s groups.

This is a complete recording of the famous London Royal Albert Hall concert of April 2nd, 1975, that had been broadcast by the BBC radio. The sound quality is nearly perfect, as it was mastered straight from the original BBC tape, plus it has the missing "finale" from the first set, taken from a first generation audience recording. This release is unique in terms of the fact that it features one of the very few concerts where Michael Hoenig replaced the absent Peter Baumann.

This is a one-shot band that released the album “Spring” in 1971. The sound of Spring is a ‘Mellotron’s heaven’, no less than three members use this marvellous instrument! So it isn’t no surprise that this album is loaded with Mellotron (flute – and violin-sound) but it doesn’t harm the compositions, there’s no overkill. All 8 songs from the original LP from ’71 sound warm and melodic with strong vocals, many floods of organ and sensitive electric guitar work and beautiful twanging 12-string guitar play. Certainly one of the gems, beloved by the ‘connaiseurs’. By the way, many years later drummer Pique Withers became famous with Dire Straits.

B-side of "Cloudy." This song was described as a "novelty" for this band, although it stands up incredibly well on it's own merit. Great harmonies. Band was from Riverside, California

Fowley at his most melodic moment. Hard to believe that this gem was recorded in late '66, although sources insist. Co-Produced by Michael Lloyd. B-side of "Don't be Cruel," which featured backing tracks by members from Fleetwood Mac.

B-Side of "Shapes of Things to Come." A substantially different version than appears on the LP. Pretty long guitar lead for a single.

Not same band that recorded LP's on Karma and Uni. B-Side is "Your Love is True." Great tune in the vein of "Last Train to Clarksville."

Band was from Ann Arbor, Michigan. A distinctly British feel to this single. Apparently pre-Savage Grace. Flip Side is "Timekeeper" on stock copies, although this pressing was a double A-side promo.

B-side is "The Jones." Gotta love that lead guitar tone...

A-Side is "Fear." Produced by Brian Ross. A tune very heavy on organ sound. Sounds like Iron Butterfly without the bite.

Single was pressed, then withheld because they couldn't convince U.S. Forest Service to let them use "Smokey the Bear" as the A-Side title. From Michigan.

First single released prior to their two LP's on RCA. From Morgantown West VA, basically a Pittsburgh band. Love that vacuum tone... These kids sound young!

B-side is "Sewer Rat Love Chant." The lyrics in both songs seem to have no bearing on the titles. Band was from Fresno, CA.
24. Layne Martine Jr. - Surabian Lament (1:38) General International (1966)
A very short, middle- eastern influenced tune. Martine Jr. was an extremely prolific songwriter dring the 60's and 70's and this appears to be his first recording from late 1966.

Similar to the "Turkish Delights" compilation is this great collection of vintage psychedelic rock music from Turkey. With 22 tracks, spanning the years 1966-1975, this collection is a great introduction to the fantastic, long-lost Middle Eastern acid rock scene. These bands raved it up in Istanbul nighclubs, blending the Western garage-psych rock of the era with Turkish folk influences (electic fuzz saz!), bellydancing beats, and all manner of "exotic" flourishes.

Recently receiving a lot of interest and rightly so, cause these Midwest boys blow most Bay Area groups away on their own turf. Powerful hippierock with prototype heavy moves, strong songwriting and brilliant performances - the rhythm section is awesome. There are many good albums in the epic psych genre but this one is charged with a special spirit that creeps upon you over time. And "Country Dawn" has to be one of the best rural rockers ever.

I am now playing Turkish Delights - 26 Ultrarities from beyond the Sea of Marmara and I can't believe how good it is !!

Love, Peace and Poetry is a consistently high-quality series, with eight volumes to date covering almost all of the world. The focus here is on psychedelia, with most of the recordings coming from the late sixties and early seventies. The tracks included in the Love, Peace and Poetry comps are all from LPs rather than singles, and these clearly come from a deep collection. These collections have very little overlap with any other series out there. Each volume of this series is well documented and the tracks are varied and well chosen. A particularly nice touch is that each volume includes information on obtaining original records or reissues, as well as other psych related contacts. One ironic note is that the cover art does not display the same variety as the music on the comps. All of the covers feature the same person, Cheryl Shrode, who was a Playboy bunny featured on the cover of the April, 1967, issue. No nude shots included in any of the Love, Peace and Poetry covers, though. According to the liner notes, these shots were taken in 1968. No explanation is given for the obsession with Cheryl Shrode, except that one of her hobbies was underground music (along with designing clothes, cooking Asian food and writing poetry). If she is the Love, Peace and Poetry muse then it's all to the good. You really can't go wrong with any volume in this series.

"I met Tony Conrad again in Atlanta 1994 and we had plenty of time to talk. He told me the story of his music and of La Monte Young. You see those guys recorded many many tapes together but la monte kept all the tapes for himself and refused to give them back to Tony. So tony went to some of his concerts and stood in the entrance with signs saying "La Monte Young, get out of town, NOW !" or "I want to hear my music before I die", "You want to see me die before i hear my music " etc...
