13th Floor Elevators were formed by Tommy Hall, a philosophy student at the University of Texas in Austin, three members from the local group The Lingsmen(Sutherland, Thurman, Watson) and teenage lead singer Roky Erickson. He came from The Spades - a local group that have had a minor hit with his song "You're Gonna Miss Me".

Their debut album The Psychedelic Sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators is a classic in the Garage/Psych genre. Roky sang as if he were possessed by a whole army of demons. Stacy Sutherland's lead guitar is reverb-drenched, and, on top of this mindblowing music is Tommy Hall's weird jug - it sounds something like a hundred evil ducks or Pere Ubu's synth.

On their second record, Easter Everywhere, the rhythm section was changed - Danny Galindo (bass) and Danny Thomas (drums).

Roky Erickson had been arrested several times for possesion of marijuana. To avoid prison, he claimed mental illness and was sent to Rusk State Mental Hospital for three years.

Their record label, International Artists, released two more albums: a fake "live" album Live and Bull of The Woods. The later included some old recordings, but otherwise it's Stacy Sutherland's album.

Sutherland was shot and killed by his wife in 1978.

After the milder reverberations of their first three albums, "Autobahn" had incredible success on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching the "Top 5" in England and the USA. The title track, "Autobahn," was released as a single (and edited, four-minute version), and reached 11th place on the British charts and 25th place in the USA. It became one of Kraftwerk's classics, played at the group's shows even today, and was the beginning of a series of subsequent conceptual albums. "Autobahn" is a celebration of sensations that accompany an automobile trip on the German highways (autobahns), and was the group's first song to include sung lyrics and vocals.
After the success of "Autobahn," Kraftwerk finally went beyond the borders of Germany to become a world-wide influence, and soon substantial changes became necessary. It began with the launch of their own label Kling Klang, licensed through Capitol Records. In 1975 the next step was the undertaking of their first world tour, with concerts in France, the United Kingdom, and in more than 30 American cities including this Dallas show. The contact with American culture, in particular, made Ralf and Florian see the importance of seeking out a genuine German identity in their music. They came to understand how much their generation found itself lost in relation to their cultural roots by simply copying the British and North American cultural paradigms.

It all started about 35 years ago. I suppose you could call it an accident. In the years before, when I still went to school, I had some guitar training, and then I played acoustic guitar for about six years. Also I fooled around with the electric guitar, playing music of THE SHADOWS or THE SPOTNICKS. Then I started with drums. My brother was a drummer with a jazz band, so I thought that drumming would be more pleasant than playing guitar. After that I was drumming in the avantgarde/free rock trio PSY FREE, then TANGERINE DREAM, and in August 1970 I founded ASH RA TEMPEL. One day I said to myself "okay, it's all pretty and normal music, but if I want to do something special, I should change instruments." That was when I started with keyboards, at the end of '71. I didn't know anything about keyboards, I didn't know which note was re or sol. Remember, that "keyboards" at this time meant either piano, electric piano or organ. I had just an old, small, used, electric Teisco home organ. I also had my drumming experiences, and I had a few special ideas: A kind of dream that I couldn't explain then, or now. So I started something new, and I developed and improved, because I love to make music. At this time I was studying mainly German literature, but I said "forget it. I want to do music". It was a very emotional decision.

Tony Conrad began his career in the early 1960’s as a member of the original Theater of Eternal Music (also known as the Dream Syndicate) with La Monte Young and John Cale. Conrad and Cale were also members of the Primitives, a rock band which eventually mutated into the Velvet Underground. The powerfully narcotic, droning amplified string sound that Cale and Conrad pioneered later became known to rock listeners through VU songs like “Venus in Furs” and “Heroin.” Conrad eventually became better known for his work with experimental film and video. His musical reputation was hampered by Young’s autocratic suppression of the early Theater of Eternal Music recordings. Made over three days on a remote farm in northern Germany, Outside the Dream Syndicate -- Tony Conrad's historic 1972 meeting with rock visionaries Faust -- was the composer and violinist's debut album and a revelatory document of his central role in the birth of minimalism. Issued only in Europe, it was the first officially available record of Conrad's microtonal explorations, initiated in the Dream Syndicate in the early 1960s. This 30th Anniversary Edition features a second disc of originally unreleased music from the sessions and restores Outside the Dream Syndicate to its rightful place in history: as the vital link between early minimalism and the rock avant-garde.

Teenage Shutdown - without a doubt, one of the best garage rock compilation series ever. If you love this kind of music, you should pick up every single album in this series. The sound is perfectly transferred from a $30,000 turntable in Germany, and the song selections are wonderful.

Museo Rosenbach were an Italian band who released the brilliant Zarathustra in 1973. The original LP issue commands large sums of money from collectors, but, unlike many others, with very good reason. The music is prime organ/Mellotron-driven progressive rock that sounds like a melodic version of early ELP, with high-energy keyboard and guitar solos. This release falls into the same class as Il Balletto Di Bronzo's Ys, with less ... er ... tortured vocals. The highlight is the 20+ minute title track that goes through a variety of moods, each of which is underpinned by the keyboard work of Pit Corradi, accompanied by the Palmer-like drums of Giancarlo Golzi.
Albums as good as Zarathustra come along all too rarely; maybe it's a good thing Museo Rosenbach's career was so cruelly truncated, as they never got the chance to slide into mediocrity.

In the world of space music, Achim Reichel wrote the flight manual. Undeniably legendary, this release was difficult to find even when it was released in the early 1970's. It was here that Reichel developed his unique "echo guitar" sound, which is most beautiful. Add to that the fact this was also superbly recorded (by Conny Plank), and you have the best of all worlds.

A concept album, it is divided into themes, spread out over 4 sides: "Invitation; The Echo of the presence; The Echo of time; The Echo of the future; The Echo of the past". This contains some of the most innovative and beautiful music Reichel would ever release.

Sei Still, Wisse Ich Bin -- This album features a heavy choral sound on just about every track. The music consists of ritualistic chanting supported by guitar and piano ostinatos, very atmospheric and often quite gloomy but songs like "Wehe Khorazin" and "Im Garten der Gemeinschaft" are compelling. Chris Karrer of Amon Düül II contributes some sax. Lot of this music is also on the soundtrack album Fitzcarraldo.





Yoga (PDU, 1976 - Tempel, 1992) contains two Fricke ragas performed by Indian musicians (sitar, tamboura, tabla).












Letzte Tage Letze Naechte (UA, 1976) is, surprisingly, an album in the vein of early Amon Duul II or Agitation Free. Fricke and Fichelscher (responsible for all instruments) truly "rock". The dialectics between the two is a show in itself: the guitar is the demon that jumps out of every passage, while the piano is the angel that tries to keep warmth and quiet. The guitar is pure, edonistic chaos, while the piano is ascetic, classical order.







This Herzog soundtrack contains four Popol Vuh tracks, some previously released. "Wehe Khorazin" is a great, darkly churning anthem unavailable elsewhere. Quite a good soundtrack otherwise, with some Strauss, Verdi, and Bellini rounding things out. OK, it's not exactly a "real" Popol Vuh album, I'm afraid. Somebody want it anyway?
