Ash Ra Tempel - Join Inn
The Shadows of Knight - Gloria, Backdoor Men, Raw 'N Alive at the Cellar, Chicago 1966!
Although revisionist historians will claim that any Shadows of Knight best-of that includes "Gloria" will cover just about everything you'll ever need on this Chicago punk band (and usually acting as if Van Morrison's and Them's original was the actual hit -- wrong), true believers have long championed their two original albums for the Dunwich label, especially their debut long-player named after their big hit. Why? Simply because it positively rocks with a raw energy of a band straight out of the teen clubs, playing with a total abandon and an energy level that seems to explode out of the speakers. Equal parts Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Who, and snotty little Chicago-suburb bad boys, the Shadows of Knight could easily put the torch to Chess blues classics, which make up the majority of the songs included here. Their wild takes on "I Just Want to Make Love to You," "Oh Yeah," and "I Got My Mojo Working" rank right up there with any British Invasion band's version from the same time period. Original material was never plentiful on either SOK long-player, but worth checking out are "Light Bulb Blues," the blues ballad "Dark Side," and the why-me? rocker "It Always Happens That Way." Completing the package is the inclusion of three bonus tracks, the single-only "Someone Like Me" and an alternate version, and "I Got My Mojo Working," which is vastly superior to the take on the original album. Ash Ra Tempel - The Private Tapes (Vol. 1-2-3-4-5)
The members of Ash Ra Tempel were in the late sixties some young people who were making their way in music. They were eager to explore new sonic worlds, and give their lives a bearing according to their most idealistic thoughts instead of allowing themselves to be drawn by the currents of social conventionalism. Manuel Göttsching (born in 1952) went through several amateur bands of rock and blues, mostly integrated by teenagers. Klaus Schulze (born in 1947) was a percussionist of the psychedelic rock band Psy Free, and also of Tangerine Dream, the band with which he recorded their first album. Hartmut Enke, Lutz Ulbrich and other musicians related to Ash Ra Tempel played in psychedelic bands like for instance Agitation Free and Wallenstein. In the summer of 1970, Göttsching and Enke, who were friends and had played together in several amateur bands, met Schulze, who had left Tangerine Dream after recording Electronic Meditation. The innovative musical concepts in his part seduced them, and they soon jumped from rock / blues to space rock, a prelude to the Cosmic Electronic Music. They created the band Ash Ra Tempel. Soon after, they awoke the interest of the people who were eager for new musical ideas. After several concerts, they recorded their first album in 1971, which they called Ash Ra Tempel, released by the label OHR. This very same year they went on a concert tour in Switzerland. After this, Schulze left the band to begin his solo career. Other members, more or less ephemeral, took Schulze's place. Also the singer Rosi Mueller joined the band, at that time being Göttsching's fiancée.
In 1971, Ash Ra Tempel contacted the famous American writer and philosopher Timothy Leary, known thanks to his books in favor of the ideas that characterized the hippie movement, his polemic permissive attitude with respect to LSD (which made him the visible head in the defense of its use as well as that of other hallucinogenic drugs), and his role in promoting the psychedelic culture as well as the New Age life style. Leary was very interested in the newly born Cosmic Music, and he established some relationships with some German electronic musicians. With Ash Ra Tempel he even came to collaborate in a joint album called Seven Up, signed by the band and the writer, that served as a vehicle for Leary's ideas. The circumstances in which the session that led to the recording of the album was developed were somewhat atypical. The members of ART and other collaborating musicians travelled to Switzerland, the nearest place to Germany where Leary could then be. Due to his dangerous attitude towards drugs, the German authorities had forbidden him to enter the country. Besides, according to what Klaus D. Mueller states, Leary hid there because the CIA was after him. During one of the recording sessions with Leary, the soda (Seven Up) that the musicians had, contained LSD, and therefore their state of mind was altered, and this was reflected in their music. They found the experience interesting, and they decided to use this peculiar recording as a basis for a record with Leary, which was released with the meaningful title Seven Up. The dangerous use of LSD on the part of the members of ART, was also extended to other projects. Klaus Schulze said during an interview in 1982 that the basis of The Cosmic Jokers (a sort of macroband formed by ART and himself, among other artists) was LSD.

Highs in the Mid-Sixties 1-2-3
HIGHS IN THE MID-60'S VOL 1 - L.A. '65 AIP 10003 USA 1983There are many reasons to dislike this elephantine Greg Shaw-mastered mid-80's series. It purports to present regional punk scenes but usually misses all the best 45s, the music often comes from second generation tape copies, the liners are full of mistakes and for every good track unavailable elsewhere, there are 4 or 5 fillers/repeats. The first three volumes are OK, probably cause they cover Shaw's LA hometurf. Beat/folkrock on this one.
HIGHS IN THE MID-60'S VOL 2 - L.A. '66 AIP 1004 USA 1983Hardly the killer it could have been, this still recycles some good 45s for the first time. The closing cut on side 1 should have been "See if I care" but isn't since the original 45 has the labels reversed...
HIGHS IN THE MID-60'S VOL 3 - L.A. '67 AIP 10005 USA 1983This is perhaps the best volume in the series; consistent and with a sensible track selection. Punk fans won't find much here but it's an essential item for any acid-punk/garage-psych fan. Lots of strange numbers.

Acid Dreams Testament
ACID DREAMS TESTAMENT (CD) DLCD 4882210 Germ? 1988The first CD comp on the market, issued in '87-88. If you just look to the music an absolute killer but 95% of the material is available on earlier vinyl comps. Not necessarily related to the Acid Dreams LP, though it recycles lots of tunes off that. Pretty good sound and classy selection.

The Ugly Ducklings - The Ugly Ducklings
The Ugly Ducklings were probably the best known Canadian garage rock group of the mid-'60s. Formed in famed Toronto’s Yorkville area in 1965, the band flourished in the many coffee houses around the Yorkville district as a Rolling Stones cover band before becoming the Ugly Ducklings and attracting the attention of the local Yorkville Records label. The band recorded a single, Nothin’, that became a Canadian hit and opened for the Rolling Stones in 1966 when the band played Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens. The band was quickly becoming local heroes and in 1967 the album, Somewhere Outside was released on the small independent Yorkville label.

The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys Remastered with Bonus Tracks (2 CD)
Though this 1979 debut album by The Cure would scarcely dent the Top 50 in the UK and entirely forego an official American release (though a handful of tracks would appear on the US-only compilation Boys Don't Cry), it remains equal parts touchstone and curiosity for Cure faithful. It's easy to see why mainstay Robert Smith has long had mixed feelings about it: The spare, angular performances and New Wave-y production cliches often seem more akin to Devo or the B-52's. Smith himself hadn't quite perfected the moody wail that would make him a pioneering goth icon, though there are hints of dark things to come on the title track and "10:15 Saturday Night." The real attraction here is the set's 20-song bonus disc, a treasure trove of primal Cure that includes key A-sides ("Boys Don't Cry," "Jumping Someone Else's Train"), early outtakes and demos (including the Ziggy-esque "I Want to Be Old" from '77, more emblematic tracks from the following year and a haunting Smith home-recording of "10:15" that shows how focused the singer's instincts were when left to his own devices) and some energetic, if sonically flawed live tracks. It's a must for Cure fans, an intriguing, warts-'n'-all portrait of a seminal rock band finding its true voice.part1 part2 part3 part4

Bent Wind - Sussex (Canada Psych 1969)
Finally here is a decent edition of the monster Canadian heavy psych ultra rarity from 1969. It's a volcanic dose of intense fuzz guitar and the perfect compliment to the band's sloppy garage ambience and chugging beat. A strange case indeed as the music on Sussex is often overshadowed by the fact that the album is one of the rarest of '60's psychedelic albums. A pity as the music is as psychedelic as they come - a veritable fuzz guitar inferno.part1 part2 part3

The End - Introspection
Over the years of their existance, The End enjoyed the active help of Rolling Stone, Bill Wyman. They had been previously introduced to Wyman by producer Glyn Johns who had spotted them backing Elkie Brooks and were amongst the support acts for the Stones September '65 tour following the release of 'Out of Our Heads' along with the Spencer Davis Group; Unit Four Plus Two and The Moody Blues. A debut single 'I Can't Get Any Joy' had duly flopped and any plans Wyman had regarding the band were then thwarted by lack of action on the part of the Stones manager Alan Klein's office. So it wasn't until nearly three years later on signing to Decca (ironically the Stones label) before any further releases kicked off again. In 1968 'Shades of Orange' / 'Loving, Sacred Loving' appeared, both songs were built up during the sessions for the Stones album 'The Satanic Majesties Request' and have appeared over the years on various Stones bootlegs which seems a little odd as apart from Wyman the only other connection is Charlie Watts who plays tabla. 'Shades' was a wonderful song with dreamy atmospheres whilst 'Loving' featured Nicky Hopkins on harpsichord. In the same year, the album 'Introspection' also appeared and is one of the highlights of the English psychedelic scene, no collection should be without it. 1. DREAMWORLD

History of UK Underground Folk Rock Vol. 1 & 2 (British Acid-Folk 1968 - 1978)
After the UK folk explosion of the early sixties, artists like The Incredible String Band, Pentangle, Cob, Fairport Convention and Strangely Strange led the genre into an experimental phase embracing psychedelia. The Erewhon CD series has fortunately released the majority of the rarest releases of that era, albums that were often privately issued and now command hundreds of pounds amongst collectors.
These collections include some of the best tracks by those artists together with previously unavailable songs by the Trees, Tir Na Nog, Mellow Candle and Horison amongst others. Opening with a sublime hippie masterpiece by Shide and Acorn, this volume journeys through the classic electric folk of Loudest Whisper, Midwinter and Gallery.
If you know Gather in the Mushrooms, these two volumes are even better so ... enjoy !
CD 1
1. Shide and Acorn - Under the Tree (1971)
2. Caedmon - Aslan (1978)

Fapardokly - Fapardokly
Fapardokly were Merrell Fankhauser guitar, Bill Dodd lead guitar, John Oliver bass, and Dick Lee drums. The odd name being a combination of their surnames - or rather three of them plus that of Don Parrish, the original bass player. But even odder is the fact that this band only plays on 3 out of the 12 tracks on the original album, 3 (maybe 4) tracks are by Aldridge, Fankhauser & Lotspeich, and 5 tracks are by Merrell & The Exiles or variants of that band.
The album is therefore a combination of various styles from early 60s beat to soft psychedelia to folk-rock recorded between 1964 and 1967 - Merrell Fankhauser being the only common element linking all the tracks. Despite this the original vinyl album has become an extremely collectable item - a psychedelic classic (apparently only 1000 copies were pressed and not many sold – hence it has become a real collectors’ item. I’ve seen an original sealed copy offered for sale at $500 !!).

Acid Visions - Best of 60's Texas Psych Punk
ACID VISIONS VOL 1 Voxx 200.008 USA 1983 (tracks 1-14) Put together by Texas fan/collector Peter Buesnel, this one's pretty great. Fuzz killers and acidpunk with some folkrock thrown in for good measure. The unreleased stuff is remarkably good. A couple of lame tracks but all in all the best Texas comp outside the Flashback series.ACID VISIONS VOL 2 Voxx 200.054 USA 1988 (tracks 15-28) Far weaker second volume with only the Voxx label in common with the above. All the best stuff is on Flashback and the unreleased tunes are pretty crappy. A few good westcoast style psych tracks hardly makes this worthwhile. To top things off, the well-known Bad Roads tune is presented as a recently discovered acetate unknown!

Tudor Lodge - Tudor Lodge (British Acid Folk 1971)
One of the most venerated progressive 'freak folk' albums of all time, released in 1970 on Vertigo. Its striking artwork has made it much sought after by collectors but the music is the main attraction -- delicate and rather extravagant, and very original for the time period, characterized by complex arrangements featuring acoustic instruments with an excellent use of flute, acoustic guitars and impeccable vocals. Tudor Lodge were very well known at the time, thanks to their numerous live appearances, in particular at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 1971.part1pw = posted_first_at_chocoreve

The 13th Floor Elevators, 1966 (l-r): Tommy Hall, Roky Erickson, Stacy Sutherland, John Ike Walton, and Ronnie Leatherman
Walton says the band "got out of Texas, went to California, and started writing stuff out there." The Elevators basked in their moment of glory, rubbing shoulders with their peers in Moby Grape and the Grateful Dead. They headlined shows at the Avalon and pursued enlightenment. Friction plagued the band in the form of drugs, particularly speed.
"One of the things that upset Tommy most was speed, amphetamines," states Clementine Hall. "I remember Stacy saying, 'But Tommy, I've never felt love being poured on me like when I take amphetamines.' Tommy would say it was evil, bad for you, and Stacy would say, 'But I need to escape to the place where I am loved.' Benny liked speed for other reasons, not because he felt warm and mushy but because he could think faster and accomplish more.
"Tommy would say, 'The philosophy behind the righteous drugs is that they're drugs that have been used for centuries by Indians – peyote, mushrooms, marijuana, and by extension LSD. We don't use escape drugs, ever. We do not use pills or any addictive drugs. If you take them for pleasure, they become psychologically addictive. Nobody takes LSD for pleasure. It teaches you way too much about yourself.'"
