Norwegian producer Deathprod is the mad scientist of ambient music.
Armed with his self-described “audio virus” – an aural Pandora’s box of decomposing electronics, primitive samplers and all things drone and hiss – Helge Sten has tweaked and twiddled himself into the all to rare position of being an unyieldingly original ambient composer.
Furthermore, Sten began piecing together his haunting collages over a decade ago, well before the current boom in all things minimal.
Reference Frequencies, Treetop Drive and Imaginary Songs From Tristan da Cunha, the three albums that round out the set, offer a commanding look into Deathprod’s dense world of sound.
Finally, Morals and Dogma showcases some of the most glacial of Deathprod’s works.
Album centerpiece “Dead People’s Things” finds Ryan coaxing unearthly rattles and shivers from the strings of his violin.
The 20-minute track, recorded in 1994, creeps forward with Deathprod adding haunting howls from his test oscillator. It is an exercise in extreme subtlety, a massive, frigid composition.

Map of What Is Effortless was probably anything but effortless in its creation. Crisp, majestic, and swirling, this sophomore record trumps their debut in spades.
Fahrenheit Fair Enough (the group's 2001 fine enough in its own right debut) noodled with a mix of post-rock aesthetics filtered through beats split apart on a G4 and chilled, where Map brings the grandeur of radio-inflected soul, motion picture soundtrack pads, and even a little bravado with a production frame that kills anything found on the dial. Beautiful vocal performances easily float around Telefon Tel Aviv's crisp claps and melodic progressions.
Each track floats on by, and that's the effortless part of it — this record is over before you know it.
Highlights include the cocky "My Week Beats Your Year" and the sensitive "Nothing Is Worth Losing That," but there's hardly a weak moment here.
TTA manage to not only make their first great album, but also put in the first entry for the best of 2004.

Philip Glass - Music With Changing Parts.mp3

Music With Changing Parts is one of the seminal works in Philip Glass' career, and a defining point for the genre known as minimalism.
Recorded in 1971, five years before he would break through to the public consciousness with Einstein on the Beach (which, arguably, was the moment his music ceased to be minimalist in the strict sense of the term), it represents the genre in a very pure form.
Over its hour-long course, it both maintains a steady-state of sameness while percolating with all manner of variations.
In retrospect, it's easy to see the affinities to the contemporaneous work of Terry Riley (A Rainbow in Curved Air and In C) and Steve Reich (Drumming), though all would soon branch apart. Here, the electric keyboards provide a pulsating substructure over which the winds, violin, and voice cast long, sighing lines forming the essential tension between dreaminess and rigor.
There's also a palpable sense of excitement in the performance, the musicians very aware that they're on to something new and wonderful.

Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of balance is a documentary film directed by Godfrey Reggio which consists mostly of slow motion and time-lapse (fast motion) footage, starting with cave paintings and desolate desert landscapes, progressing to footage of various natural environmental phenomena such as waves and cloud formations, and then to footage of man-made events including mining operations, traffic formations, commercial passenger aircraft, demolition and desolate urban landscapes. The film invites comparison between various natural and technological phenomena.

Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation is the 1988 sequel to the experimental 1983 documentary film Koyaanisqatsi, by Godfrey Reggio.
Powaqqatsi is a Hopi word meaning "parasitic way of life" or "life in transition". While Koyaanisqatsi focused on modern life in industrial countries, Powaqqatsi, which similarly has no dialogue, focuses more on the conflict in third world countries between traditional ways of life and the new ways of life introduced with industrialization.

Vetiver - Vetiver

Vetiver's first album is a rather wonderful debut, and possibly telling of a very interesting place for the band in the contemporary folk scene. For what I know, they hailed from San Francisco and could be considered "psych-folk" kin to Joanna Newson, another young promising artist, and Devendra Barnhart, although not as dark and adventurous as the latter, both of whom guest here along with Hope Sandoval.
Actually, "Vetiver" is the name of an essential oil which is described as "Woody, earthy, herbaceous, spicy almost smoky," which is not a bad description for the overall mood of the songs included here.
This CD, impressive for a debut, already shows a wide breadth of interests and a distinct sound, from the zanier "Amour Fou" to the Spanish-sung- pastoral "Los Pajaros del Rio." This is not to say that Vetiver is beyond influences, Nick Drake -as much as his name has been an abused reference to most recent folk ... I know- and Vashti Bunyan , or even early Donovan, come to mind easily.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. (Underground Freak Out), as the full name goes, were formed in 1996. AMT (for short) play progressive jams in the vein of psychedelic freaks such as Magma and Gong. Furthermore, Kawabata believes he is the reincarnation of hippie guru Father Yod.

During this show Kawabata had the whole one side of the bar run for their lives at one point in the show, because he swung his guitar and just about killed them all with it during "Blue Velvet Blues"! It was a blast!
