"The Velvet Underground and Nico is a portrait of the band, recorded during a practice session at the Factory; apparently shot in January1966, it shows the goup rehearsing for what was probably their opening at the Film-Makers' Cinematheque in February. The music is an instrumental number; Nico, the German singer and actress whom Warhol introduced into the band, sits on a stool and bangs a tambourine, while her son Ari plays on the floor at her feet. The two reels contain a great deal of wild camerawork and psychedelic zooming, which indicates that this film was intended for exhibition, probably in double-screen, behind the Velvet Undergound on stage. It is easy to imagine how this footage might have looked projected in a large, crowded theater in an atmos phere of deafining music, wild dancing, and strobe lighting.
As if to authenticate the film's countercultural status, the second reel documents the arrival of the New York City police during the filming, apparently in response to a telephoned complaint about the noise level at the Factory. After a disarmingly self-conscious cop appears on screen to adjust the amplifier, the rehearsal is stopped, and the camera pulls back to show the deep space of the studio-one of the few documentary of the Factory in Warhol's films-where Warhol is seen talking with the police while the Velvets, Gerard Malanga, Billy Name, and other Factory regulars mill around."

Incredible String Band - The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter

One of the more unusual groups to come out of Britain in the 1960s, the Incredible String Band were highly influential in their day with the likes of Robert Plant and the Rolling Stones citing them as references. The String Band is one of those groups that are very difficult to categorise, sometimes described as psychedelic folk music, they were certainly an early exponent of World Music in the UK.
The group came together in the mid-1960s. Clive Palmer and Robin Williamson had been playing together at Clive's Incredible Folk Club, a small folk club in Saucihall Street in Glasgow. They built up quite a following including Billy Connolly and Mike Heron, who later joined on guitar. They were a trio when Joe Boyd visited the club having heard about the band. He signed them to Elektra and they completed their first album, The Incredible String Band released in 1966. This showcased the fine writing talents of the three members and already showed, to a small extent, that they were moving beyond the usual folk style.
Hangman’s was the album which catapulted the String Band from the folk scene into the mainstream of psychedelia.
It was even more experimental than 5,000 Spirits. Both Mike and Robin were developing as multi-instrumentalists. Mike restricted himself to guitar, sitar and keyboards but Robin had built up an impressive repertoire including guitar, drums, Jew’s harp, whistle, harmonica, mandolin and sort of Arab fiddle called a gimbri.

The first poster of the psychedelic era

The Charlatans performed their first show at the Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada on June, 21 1965. It proved to be a psychedelic event with the band fuelled by Augustus Owlsley Stanley III's first batch of LSD. A poster was designed by Charlatan members George Hunter and Michael Ferguson to advertise the Red Dog events. It became known as The Seed and is widely accepted as being the first poster of the psychedelic era.

The founders of San Francisco acid-rock, the first band to break away from the conventions of the Merseybeat, and to ingest massive doses of LSD, were the Charlatans. The group was built around two folksingers, singer and drummer Dan Hicks and guitar player Mike Wilhelm, and one underground light show experimenter, George Hunter.
In the summer of 1965 in Virginia City, Nevada, the Charlatans and a small following of hippies took over the Red Dog Saloon and held concerts six days a week. The premises, where Hunter created the first light shows, and psychedelic guru Ken Kesey had become a fixture, were soon filled by young people from the neighboring towns. When the police chased them out of Virginia City, the hippie gathering moved to San Francisco. What happened afterwards in San Francisco was nothing but the continuation of what the Charlatans and their friends had started in Nevada.

But only after many years scanty and faded echoes of their sound reached vinyl. The album they recorded in 1967 with singer Lynne Hughes, that includes Codine and The Shadow Knows, was released after ten years with the title The Charlatans (Groucho, 1977).
After losing Hicks and Hunter, Mike Wilhelm and the remaining members recorded The Charlatans (Philips, 1969), a record that has nothing acid about it.
